GAME ONE BOX SCORE       GAME TWO BOX SCORE

(GLEN BURNIE, Md.) Division I Coppin State University took two from Bowie State University, defeating the Lady Bulldogs 4-1 and 7-2. Coppin State, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) improves its record to 7-2, while the Bowie State record dips to 2-4 overall.  Bowie State returns to action tomorrow (March 10) in another non-conference game at Goldey-Beacom College.

Amber Miller (Wilson, N.C.) lined a shot of the third base glove, scoring Page Arnold (Detroit, Mich.) from second in the bottom of the first inning. Arnold reached after lacing a single through the right side of the Bowie State infield.

Stephanie Watts (Detroit, Mich.) scored run number two for the Coppin State Eagles in the bottom of the third after Arnold beat out a throw from short to first with two out.

Tiffani Whaley (White Plain, Md.) scored Patrice Williams (Baltimore, Md.) from third on a soft grounder to the pitcher, increasing Coppin State’s lead to 3-0 through four innings of play.

Bowie State missed a scoring opportunity in their half of the fifth inning. Freshman Amanda Hedgepeth (Odenton, MD, Arundel) began the inning with a single through the right side and advanced to third on back-to-back ground outs. Unfortunately for the Lady Bulldogs, senior Faline Brown (Inwood, W.Va., Hagerstown C.C.) went down swinging, leaving Hedgepeth stranded at third.

Freshman Kristen Lee (Germantown, MD, Northwest) stroked a triple down the left field line to begin the Bowie State sixth inning. Lee scored the Lady Bulldogs lone run of the game, following a ground out by junior transfer Shalai Tabor (Waldorf, MD, Delaware State Univ.).

Coppin State added one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning to close out game one 4-1. Arnold struck out 12, allowed just four hits and led the Eagles with a pair of hits.

BSU’s Lady Bulldogs accounted for four hits in the first game with Hedgepeth, Lee, Tabor and senior Annette Makle (Brandywine, MD, Gwynn Park) tallying one hit each.

Brown dropped to 1-2 on the season, struck out five and gave up six hits in game one of the double dip.

The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs started game two with solid hitting. Hedgepeth led off with a single through the right side of the Eagles infield and senior Kelley Alexander (Damascus, Md., Covenant Life, Montgomery College) drilled a ball to deep left field, scoring Hedgepeth. Makle hit a blooper just off the glove of the Coppin State shortstop, scoring Alexander.

Coppin State answered with two runs in their portion of the first inning to tie things up at 2-2. The Bowie State defense picked up a huge double play to end the inning with the bases loaded with Eagles. With one out and the sacks loaded, Coppin State’s Charma Robinson hit a grounder back to BSU freshman pitcher Megan Alexander (Damascus, Md., Damascus), who threw home for the force and junior Danielle McClay (Silver Spring, MD, Montgomery Blair) threw to first to get Robinson.

Arnold gave the Coppin State Eagles a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the third, hitting a leadoff, inside the park homerun to left. The Eagles put together a two out rally, pushing across four more runs to extend their lead to 7-2.

Lee was Bowie State’s top offensive producer in the nightcap, leading the Lady Bulldogs with two hits. Hedgepeth, Tabor, Makle and Kelley Alexander recorded a hit apiece in the final game of the season series.

The Eagles cranked out 12 hits with Arnold leading the charge with a game-high four hits and three RBI in game two.

Bowie State heads north for another non-conference contest, traveling to Goldey-Beacom College (Wilmington, Del.) for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
