BOWIE STATE BOWLING IN THIRD PLACE AFTER DAY ONE OF CHAMPIONSHIPS

(DURHAM, N.C.) Fayetteville State completed the first day of the 2010 CIAA Women's Bowling Championships on Saturday with a 5-0 record at the AMF University Lanes. The Lady Broncos hold a 39-pin (5,281-5,242) lead over Elizabeth City State; while Bowie State trails in third with 5,059 pins. Day one of the championships consisted of cross-divisional team play. The tournament will continue on Sunday morning at 9:25 a.m. with cross-divisional Baker matches. Afternoon play, which consists of double-elimination bracket Baker play, will start at 2:35 p.m.

Fayetteville State defeated the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Vikings by slim margins. BSU fell by 11 pins (840-829); while ECSU dropped by 16 (878-862). Second-place Elizabeth City State finished the day with a 4-2 record. The Lady Vikings lost to the Lady Broncos and to Shaw 875-832. Bowie State posted a 5-1 record along with Virginia State. The third place Lady Bulldogs earned a slim 21-pin victory over Johnson C. Smith (772-751). Virginia State ended the day fourth in the team standings with 4,752 pins. The Lady Trojans' only loss was to the Broncos.

Several bowlers rolled impressive matches on the first day. All-CIAA Bowler Verra Diggs (Fort Washington, MD, Oxon Hill, Hampton Univ.) of Bowie State led all bowlers with a 203 average in five matches including back-to-back scores of over 200. Though her 200 scores stood out, they were not the highest of the day. That distinction belonged to Tiffany Johnson of Elizabeth City State. She bowled a score of 255 against Chowan in ECSU's first match. Johnson, an All-CIAA Bowler, finished with the day's second-best average of 193.2 in five matches.

Sasha Thornhill led Johnson C. Smith with a 191.4 average including a high of 213. All-CIAA Bowlers Jessica Styers and Akira Turner sparked Fayetteville State to a first-day lead with outstanding performances. Styers rolled two 200-plus games in averaging a team-high 188.4 score. Turner, the CIAA Bowler of the Year, also bowled two games of more than 200 pins, including a 230 score, for an average of 188.2. Turner had the highest average (198.77) and Styers owned the second-best average (189.33) entering the tournament.

A few other bowlers stood out on the first day. Khandi Joseph of Shaw bowled a 226 in one match, and Nijah Braddox of Johnson C. Smith rolled a 221. Ria Sweeney of Livingstone bowled a 216 and Kristin Moore of Virginia State posted a 223 score in one match. Moore's teammate Kendra Plummer of VSU scored a 226 in a match, and Shanice Watkins of ECSU bowled a 214.

The Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and Finals will begin on Monday at 9:20 a.m.
