BULLDOGS BOUNCE CHEYNEY IN SEASON OPENER

(BOWIE, MD)  Bowie State University opened the 2007-2008 season, hosting the Bulldogs Classic and easily defeated the Cheyney (PA) University Wolves 75-53.  Jason Ingram led Bowe State with a game-high 18 points and Joshua Johnson contributed 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Bulldogs set the tone from the very beginning and opened up a 39-15 advantage by halftime.  BSU converted 15 of its 29 first half field goal attempts (51.7%) while holding Cheyney to just six of 19 (31.6%) in the first 20 minutes of the game.  Thirteen first half turnovers by the Wolves of Cheyney, translated into 15 first half points.

Cheyney improved its field goal shooting in the second half (15 of 38) but the hole was just too deep.  Bowie State cooled down in the final stanza, scoring on just eight of 24 second half attempts (33.3%), but included four of eight from behind the arc.  Bowie State floor general Carlos Williams dished out a game-high nine assists to go along with 13 points.

Robbie Simpson and Maurice McPherson scored 12 points each in the loss for Cheyney.  Tyrone Smith pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for the Wolves and added eight points.  Cheyney (0 - 1) will take on East Stroudsburg in the 2 p.m. consolation game of the Bulldogs Classic, Saturday (11/17) afternoon.

Bowie State (1 - 0) and Holy Family, a 89-82 victor over East Stroudsburg in the opening game of the Classic, will meet on the hardwood in the 4 p.m. for the championship game.
