BOX SCORE
(RALEIGH, N.C. – December 8, 2007) The St. Augustine's Falcons erased an 11-point halftime deficit and came back to defeat Bowie State's Bulldogs 61-56 to remain undefeated at 6-0 (5-0 in the CIAA). BSU Bulldogs drop to 4-3 on the year and 0-3 in the CIAA.
Bowie State pretty much had their way in the first half, hitting 14-of-33 from the field and held St. Augustine's to just eight-of-30. The Bulldogs quickly opened up a 20-9 advantage midway through the half, pushed that lead to 14 points (33-19) by the 2:05 mark and went into halftime holding a 35-24 lead. Senior Joshua Johnson was the big dog in the first period, scoring 14 points for Bowie State and grabs five first half rebounds.
St. Augustine's came out in the second half with a look of determination. The Falcons trio of Justin Dickens, Will Gill and Jamar Greene were the home team's main offensive weapons combining 17 of the 37 second half points. Hayward Fain elevated his game in final stanza, scoring seven points, including two big free throws to tie the game at 48-48 with 8:55 left to play. Fain then scored a layup on the Falcons next possession to give St. Augustine's its first lead of the night. A layup by BSU's Jason Ingram (6 points) knotted the game at 50.
Both team went a little flat over the next 2:22 before Wakim White's free throw put St. Augustine's in front to stay. In fact, Bowie State went without a basket of any kind until Ingram's free throw with 4:02 remaining. To further illustrate Bowie State's troubles, the only two field goals in the final eight minutes came from freshman Delano Johnson (2 points) and senior Arthur Bowers (5 points). Bowie State's second half field goal percentage plummeted to 27 percent, which included one for eight from behind the three point line and four-of-10 from the free throw line.
Bowie State was led by Johnson with 18 points before fouling out. Senior David Paris was the only other Bulldogs player to reach double figures in scoring with 10 points but fouled out of the Bulldogs lineup. Sophomore Christian Jackson came off the bench to lead the Bulldogs with seven rebounds.
Gill paced St. Augustine's with a team-high 16 points, which included four-of seven behind the arc. Dickens and Greene also scored in double figures, recording 12 and 11 points respectively. The Falcons Fain ripped down a game-high 14 rebounds before fouling out.
BSU's Bulldogs will close out a four-game road trip at Mansfield (PA) University – Wednesday (12/13) before playing host to the St. Paul's College Tigers – Saturday, December 15th at 4 p.m.
