(FAYETTEVILLE, NC) Day one of the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up has concluded and Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs won one match and lost two matches. The BSU record goes to 4-8 (2-2 in the CIAA) heading into tomorrow's final day of play.
Bowie State won its opening match of the Round-Up, defeating St. Augustine's College 3-0, winning by scores of 31-29, 30-22 and 30-20. Junior Tamira Conner Rogers paced Bowie State with 42 attacks, 11 digs and five service aces. Sophomore Bethany Sloat led her Lady Bulldogs with 14 kills in the three game sweep of the Lady Falcons and freshman Brigitte Fabre contributed 20 attacks for BSU. St. Augustine's was led by Jazmine Wilson's 32 attacks and Curby Rogers added another 29 attacks.
Host Fayetteville State University won three straight games against Bowie State in one of the 2 p.m. contest, winning by scores of 32-30, 30-16 and 30-21. Sloat and Conner Rogers were tops in BSU kills with 10 each and digs with 13 and 15 respectively. Sha'Quana Veney accounted for a game high 19 digs for FSU's Lady Broncos to go along with 10 attacks.
Bowie State University dropped its final match of the day, falling in four games to Shaw University by scores of 30-26, 31-29, 21-30 and 23-30. The Conner/Sloat duo once again paced the Lady Bulldogs combining for 50 of BSU's 92 total attacks and tallied four service aces each. Rachel Walters and Sharetta Riggins shared high game honors for Shaw in the attack category, accounting for 35 and 33 respectively.
Bowie State will play two matches tomorrow (9/16) beginning with Johnson C. Smith at 9 a.m. and will wrap up the CIAA Round-Up with an 11:30 a.m. match against Livingstone College.
