FINAL GAME STATS

(NEWBERRY, SC)  Newberry College, the 14th ranked team in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and D2football.com polls, completely dominated Bowie State, routing the Bulldogs 41-7. The win improves Newberry to 2-0 on the season, but drops Bowie State to 0-2. The 0-2 start is the first since the Bulldogs' 2001 season and the first in the Mike Lynn era.

The Indians blocked a Raymond Stargel punt and took over at the Bowie State 7-yard line. Newberry quickly capitalized when quarterback Eric McCollum rushed seven yards around the left side for a touchdown. Ryan Lukshis converted the extra point, giving the Indians an early 7-0 lead at the 9:00 mark of quarter one. Newberry increased its lead to 14-0 with 3:17 left in the first on a McCollum to David Brown 19-yard TD pass.

Alex Haynes rumbled 83 yards for another Newberry score and Lukshis added the extra point, pushing the Indians lead to 21-0. Newberry's Tharry Salley pretty much walked into the end zone from six yards out, padding the home lead to 28-0 heading into halftime. Newberry, a member of the South Atlantic Conference, rolled up 341 yards in total offense in the first half and held Bowie State to just 94 total first half yards.

With 2:07, left in the third quarter Haynes rushed for his second touchdown of the afternoon, rumbling 30 yards, setting a new Newberry school record for rushing yards in a game. Haynes ended the game with 255 yards on 25 carries.

Newberry put its final points on the board with 5:11 left in the fourth quarter, courtesy of a Brandon Grantt 4-yard toss to Carlnel Williams, making the score 41-0. McCollum completed 9-of-16 for 113 yards and David Smith accounted for 28 reception yards to lead Newberry.

The Bulldogs avoided the shutout when junior Jason Scott (Baltimore, MD) connected on a 44 pass to fellow junior Paul Atueyi (Randallstown, MD) with 2:44 remaining in the game. Senior Ronald Walls (Capital Heights, MD) converted the extra point. Scott ended the game with 72 passing yards (completing 4-of-18) and freshman Rodney Webb (Baltimore, MD) once again led the Bulldogs ground game with 68 yards on 19 carries.

As a team, Bowie State managed only 170 yards in total offense compared to 507 total yards (386 rushing and 121 passing) for Newberry. On the defensive side of the ball, BSU's Bulldogs were led by freshmen Ricardo Silva (Randallstown, MD -Baltimore Polytechnic HS) and Delano Johnson (Baltimore, MD) with 13 and nine total tackles respectively.
