(BOWIE, MD) Bowie State's Bulldogs toppled the Fayetteville State Broncos 75-64 to start second half of season on a high note. The win puts the Bowie State record at 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the CIAA. Fayetteville State dips to 4-6 on the season and 1-2 in the CIAA.
Fayetteville State held a brief 6-4 lead until Bowie State ran off 16 straight points to take a 20-6 advantage by the 9:39 mark. In fact, FSU Broncos slump spanned over 7:10 before Phillippe' Harris scored a lay-up to break the Bowie State run. Fayetteville State shot a horrific 28.1 percent in the first half (nine-of-32) from the field, which included a dismal three-of 13 behind the arc. The Broncos were no match for the Bulldogs in terms of rebounds either. Bowie State outrebounded Fayetteville State 28-13 in the first half of play.
Bowie State kicked it up a notch in the final period, leading by as much as 22 points at one point late in the game. Both teams shot 50 percent in the second half as Fayetteville hit 14-of-28 from the field and Bowie State making 15-of-30 from the field. Four of five Bowie State starters scored in double figures with senior Joshua Johnson leading the way with game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior David Paris tied his single-game high of 17 points and nine rebounds and swatted away a game-high five shots.
Senior Carlos Williams and sophomore Christian Jackson accounted for 12 and 10 points respectively for BSU's Bulldogs. As a team, Bowie State blocked a season-high nine shots and outrebounded Fayetteville State 44-29.
Ariel Robinson paced Fayetteville State with 14 points and Darshawn Johnson added 10 points in the loss.
Fayetteville State will travel to Bluefield (WV) for their next contest (1/5). Bowie State will welcome Virginia State to the A.C. Jordan Arena – Saturday (1/5) for a major CIAA Eastern Division matchup at 7:30 p.m.
