(FAYETTEVILLE, NC) Bowie State used a 23-point halftime advantage and went on to rock Fayetteville State 81-56 to sweep the season series. The win improves Bowie State to 13-7 on the year and 8-5 in the CIAA.
Fayetteville State's Jamal Austin began the night with the games first two points, but Bowie State responded with an 11-0 run. Sophomore Christian Jackson was fouled on a 3-point shot by FSU's Larry Ross and calmly sank all three free throws. Senior David Paris scored BSU's first field goal of the game and Jackson knocked down two straight 3-pointers to give the Bulldogs an 11-2 cushion. Fayetteville State went on a 6-1 run over the next 3:24 to close to within four at 12-8, but would get no closer. The BSU Bulldogs put together another run, this time 15-4 and expanded its lead to 25-12 by the 7:36 mark of the first half. BSU's Jackson ended the first half, sort of like he started it. Jackson hit his fourth 3-point field goal just before the first half clock expired to give the Bulldogs a very comfortable 47-24 lead at the break. Bowie State shot an eye popping 58.1 percent from the field (18-of-31) and held Fayetteville State to nine-of-22 from the field (40.9 percent).
The Bowie State lead grew to 31 points (61-30) by the 13:38 mark of the second half and eventually blew up to 38 points (77-39) with 7:14 left to play. By that time, Bowie State had pulled all of it starters and played the remaining bench personnel the rest of the way. Fayetteville State's field goal percentage fell just like the temperature inside Capel Arena, dipping to 26.3 percent (10-of-38) in the final 20 minutes.
Jackson led the Bulldogs in scoring with a game-high 21 points on six-of-eight shooting, which included four-of-five behind the arc, and five-of-six from the free throw line. Paris and Joshua Johnson also scored in double figures, recording 16 and 13 points respectively.
Phillippe Harris topped the Broncos with team-highs of 17 points and seven rebounds. Andy Gebru came off the Fayetteville State bench to add 12 points (all 3-pointers) and Jay Malcolm scored 10 points in the loss.
Bowie State returns to the cozy confines of the A.C. Jordan Arena – Tuesday, February 5th for a non-conference contest against Lincoln (PA) University at 7:30 p.m. Fayetteville State's Broncos travel to the Western Division leading Falcons of St. Augustine's College – Saturday, February 9th. Tip-off time is set for 7:30 p.m. in SAC's Emery Gymnasium.
