(CHARLOTTE, NC) In the last game of the quarterfinals, the No. 2 seed Bowie State University Bulldogs competed against the No. 10 seed, the Shaw University Bears. Livingstone advanced to the quarterfinals after surprising Livingstone in the first round, upending the Blue Bears 74-60. Bowie State (21-7) advances to Friday's (2/29) 7p.m. semi-final against the Fayetteville State Broncos.
From possession at jump ball, the Bulldogs delivered offense at a fast pace, using and abusing the Bear defense. Bulldogs co-captain Jason Ingram (10 points) slammed on the Bears with an intense dunk to send Bowie into the game's first timeout up by nine. All-conference Bulldog forward Joshua Johnson broke away from defenders underneath the rim with two consecutive pulls at the free throw line. Bowie State went on an impressive 18-0 run, and Shaw's last reception at 17:24 was only met by another eight minutes later by Robert Espinosa.
With six minutes remaining, All- CIAA honoree Davis Paris led the Bulldogs 4-of-7 first half shooting (eight points) and Johnson added eight points as well on 4-of-6 shooting. All-CIAA forward Damola Obadina had limited floor time in the first half and only had one attempt in the first 20 minutes, missing that and turned the ball over three times.
Guard John Kornegay led the Bears and contributed to their 9-2 run before closing the half, down by 11 (30-19). The Bulldogs finished the half with a 38.9 percent shooting percentage from the field and 25 percent from the free throw line.
Two minutes into the second half, Bowie went on a 10-0 run, allowing no Shaw offensive completions. With only 19 points, the Shaw Bears had a turnover for every point. Their first second-half field goal, at 15:03, was a fast break lay-up by Brandon Armistead. Up 16 with eight minutes remaining, Johnson had a double-double on 8-of-11 shooting from the field (17 points) and 12 rebounds. Paris added 14 total points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. The Bulldogs continued to execute on a 13-4 run in 2:42, allowing only perimeter shots from Shaw's Kornegay.
Bowie State's Johnson led all scorers with game-highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds. Paris added seven rebounds and 16 total points. Christian Jackson chipped in 12 points and tied his season-high in rebounds with 10.
Shaw wraps up their season with a record of 5-23 and was led by Obadina and Kornegay with 11 points each. Espinosa was the Shaw Bears top glass cleaner, pulling down a team-high nine rebounds.
