(BOWIE, MD) In a battle of conference unbeaten teams, the defending CIAA Champions of Bowie State University swept the visitors of Johnson C. Smith University 4-3 and 10-0. The wins improve BSU's Lady Bulldogs to 6-0 in the CIAA (6-6 overall) and drop the JCSU Lady Golden Bulls record to 6-2 in the CIAA (9-7 overall).
Game one of the weekend series, came down to the bottom half of inning seven. After Bowie State took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, Johnson C. Smith tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. The first two Lady Golden Bulls went down in order to start the inning, before Roshandae Henderson hit a triple to right field. Henderson then scored on passed ball to knot the score at 3-3. Winning pitcher Jillian Willey (3-3) manged to get Santana Smith to pop up in foul territory for the final out in the top half of the seventh. BSU's Annette Makle began the Lady Bulldogs half of the seventh inning with a single down the left field line. Erin Gray moved Makle to second on sacrifice bunt. Tiffany Toney slapped a sinlge to deep center field, scoring Makle and giving Bowie State the tough 4-3 win.
Lady Bulldogs Head Coach Fred Burroughs gave his players stern talking to between games and summed it up by saying, "We're not playing like champions!" Well, that must have been all Bowie State needed as motivation in game two. Bowie State held a slim 1-0 lead after two innings before erupting for six runs in the bottom of the third inning to jump out to a 7-1 advantage. BSU's Lady Bulldogs pushed three more across in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead, shut JCSU down in the top of the fifth inning, which resulted in the game being called due to the 8-run slaughter rule. Heather Enders struck out eight in the final game and allowed just two hits.
Toney led Bowie State with a combined four hits, which included two triples and a home run and 4 RBI. Virginia Hockey recorded a total of three hits in the two-game sweep and knocked in four RBI as well.
Bowie State will host the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University – Sunday, March 30th at 1 p.m.
