BULLDOGS BLOW OUT UNIVERSITY OF D.C. 83-61

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) Visiting Bowie State University won its seventh consecutive game over the University of the District of Columbia, rolling to an easy 83-61 victory over the Firebirds. The win, Bowie State's third in a row, improved the Bulldogs record to 6-3.

After somewhat of a slow start, Bowie State began the contest with a 6-0 run before Kenneth James (Arlington, Va. / Wakefield H.S.) score UDC's first point via free throw at the 16:52 mark. Bowie State extended their lead to 14-3 and never looked back from that point.

Bowie State's largest first half lead (33-17) came at the 6:58 mark, but UDC was able to trim the deficit to 36-28 by halftime. The University of the District of Columbia hit only six-of-24 field goal attempts (25 percent) but knocked down 14-of-19 free throws (74 percent) over the first 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs took complete control of the game in the second half, burning up the twine at a 56 percent field percentage clip (18-of-32) in addition to 80 percent from the free throw in the final period (eight-of-10).

The much taller Bulldogs of Bowie State also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Firebirds 49 to 33. Bowie State outscored the University of the District of Columbia 50-28 in the paint, scored 26 points off of 16 Firebirds' turnovers and the BSU bench outscored the host 43-9.

The University of the District of Columbia (1-13 overall) was led in scoring by James' 17 points, 11 of which came from the foul line. Tim Ellison (Alexandria, Va. / Edison H.S.) recorded a double for the Firebirds, scoring 13 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Chris Leach (Washington, D.C. / Gonzaga H.S.) and Keith Brooks (Harlem, N.Y. / Monsigenor McClancy H.S.) also scored in double figures, adding 12 and 10 points respectively to the ledger.

(Silver Spring, MD, Springbrook, Montgomery - Rockville C.C.) and Duke Crews (Hampton, VA, Bethel, Univ. of Tennessee) added a dozen points each. Crews pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and sophomore Travis Hyman (Annapolis, MD, Old Mill, Prince George's C.C.) chipped in 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks.

The Bulldogs of Bowie State, return to conference play – Saturday, January 9th, hosting the Hawks of Chowan University at 7:30 p.m. in BSU's A.C. Jordan Arena.
