(BOWIE, Md.) Bowie State University led from start to finish as the Lady Bulldogs defeat the Bloomfield College Lady Deacons 69-61 in non-conference basketball action. The win moves Bowie State to 2-0 on the season while Bloomfield drops to 1-4 overall.
It wasn't a very pretty game, but Bowie State held a lead as much as 17 points (25-8) at the 8:56 mark and strolled into halftime with a 37-24 advantage. The BSU Lady Bulldogs defense held Bloomfield to 7-of-26 from the field (27 percent) in the first period and forced 16 first half turnovers.
“I was pleased with our effort in spurts but we have to come together collectively to play a complete game”, said third-year head coach
Donna Polk.
Bowie State maintained its double-digit lead much of the second half, but Bloomfield closed to within seven twice in the final period. A 3-pointer by Ivettlis Castro narrowed the BSU lead to 54-45 and pulled to within seven on a pair of free throws by Castro. Bowie State went on a 9-2 run to extend the Lady Bulldogs lead to 14 (63-49) by the 5:06 mark.
Vanessa Lamison knocked down two free throws, capping off a 7-2 Bloomfield run and narrowed their deficit to 65-58. However, time was not on the side of the visitors. Lamison closed out the afternoon matinee with a game-high 18 points, which included 10-for-10 from the free throw line to lead Bloomfield's Lady Deacons.
As a team, Bloomfield shot better from the field in the second half (42 percent), but committed 31 turnovers overall.
The Lady Bulldogs weren't immune for the turnover bug, committing 27, 16 of which occurred in the final 20 minutes. “Our turnovers have to decrease and we have to be able to handle ball pressure better”, said Polk.

Brittne Gowdy (Baltimore, MD, Milford Mill Academy) paced Bowie State with 18, 15 and 13 points respectively.
Bowie State held a slim 37-34 advantage on the glass and junior
Juliette Turner (Atlanta, GA, John F. Kennedy) led the Lady Bulldogs in rebounds with seven.
BSU's Lady Bulldogs return to the court Wednesday (December 8th) travelling across town to face the always tough University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds. Game time at UDC's Sports Complex is 5:30 p.m.
