(BOWIE, Md.) Bowie State University completed dominated Virginia State University from the very beginning, routing the Trojans 87-59. The second ranked (NCAA Atlantic Region) Bulldogs improve their season mark to 14-3, 9-1 in the CIAA and 4-0 in the division.

“I was really pleased with our effort on the defensive end and with rebounding, which were both key's to tonight's win”, said second-year coach Darrell Brooks.

Bowie State was never threatened, jumping out to a 19-2 advantage in the games first seven minutes. By this time, Brooks went deep into his bench to get some of the non-starters so significant minutes.

Virginia State (2-16, 1-9 CIAA, 1-4 North) did not reach double digit points until the 8:58 mark of the first half with Bowie State leading 27-11. Kahlil Tate drilled a 3-pointer with a little over four minutes left in the first half to bring the Trojans as close as they would get (14 points) at 36-22.

The Bowie State Bulldogs hit 18-of-38 first half field goals and strolled into intermission with a 47-24 lead. Over half of Bowie State's points in the first 20 minutes came within the paint (24).

The Bowie State defense held the Trojans to 10-of-33 shooting from the field and almost doubled VSU on the glass, holding a 32-17 advantage in the first half.

Bowie State's offensive dominance ballooned to a game-high 46 points (76-30) with 8:57 remaining in the game, sending the starters to the bench for the rest of the night.

Bowie State tied their season-high mark of 10 blocked shots with junior Travis Hyman (Annapolis, MD, Old Mill, Anne Arundel C.C.) sending seven back the other way. Bowie State hit a season-high 34 field goals and punished Virginia State in the paint, holding a decisive 50-22 advantage.

Eleven of Bowie State's 13 players scored with junior Darren Clark (Largo, MD, Largo, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania) leading the attack with a team-high 13 points. Hyman and sophomore Byron Westmorland (Baltimore, MD, Mergenthaler, Baltimore City C.C.) added 12 points each, shooting a combined 10-of-18 from the field. Sophomore Bryan Wilson (Upper Marlboro, MD, Riverdale Baptist School) added 11 points and junior Jay Gavin (Seat Pleasant, MD, Bishop McNamara, Virginia Commonwealth University) along with senior Eric Vann (Clinton, MD, Gwynn Park, Prince George's C.C.) shipped in contributed 10 points each. Hyman tied for game-high rebound honors, collecting nine rebounds and freshman Rasheem King (Brooklyn, NY, Xaverian) grabbed seven rebounds or the Bulldogs.

Kahlil led Virginia State's Trojans with 23 points and Christopher Graves added 15 points. James Shambley was VSU's top rebounder with nine.

Bowie State hosts Washington Adventist University (formerly Columbia Union College) – Tuesday (February 1st) at 7 pm in a con-conference game followed by a major clash with Virginia Union University – Thursday (February 3rd) at VUU's Barco-Stevens Hall.
