POOR FREE THROW SHOOTING SPELLS 50-43 DEFEAT FOR LADY BULLDOGS

(ETTRICK, Va.) Bowie State University tied their season-low free throw percentage (28 percent), going four-of-14 from the charity stripe, resulting in a 50-43 defeat to Virginia State University. The loss put the Bowie State records at 16-9 overall, 11-6 CIAA and 8-3 in the North.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-4 lead before hitting a dry spell. During that time, Bowie State missed five consecutive free throws and Virginia State was getting second chances.

Virginia State controlled the glass, especially on offense, grabbing 11 compared to only six for Bowie State in the first half of play.

Virginia State narrowed the deficit to 15-10 with just over five minutes remaining in the half, but trailed by only one (17-16) at halftime.

Bowie State began the second half with a 7-1 run before Virginia State's Rhon'Neisha Taylor nailed a 3-pointer to stop the run.

Nia Thompson gave Virginia State their first lead since 2-0 at the 10:40 mark, but it was short lived.

A layup by junior Juliette Turner (Atlanta, GA, John F. Kennedy) put Bowie State back in front and a triple by senior Lakisha Walker (Baltimore, MD, St. Frances Academy) with 9:11 left to play, put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 34-30.

Back-to-back layups by Betty Apiah shifted the advantage back over to Virginia State. A Marquilla Evans triple followed by a pair of free throws by Pamela Muldrow, gave the Lady Trojans the lead for good.

Walker led Bowie State with 11 points to go along with a half dozen rebounds and assists.

Virginia State (16-8, 10-6 CIAA, 7-3 North) greatly improved their field goal shooting in the second half, going from 17 percent (five-of-29) to 43 percent (13-of-30).

The Lady Trojans were led by Rhon'Neisha Taylor's double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Morgan McGill hauled down 11 rebounds

The Lady Bulldogs will close out the regular season on Monday (February 21), hosting the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University. Game time is set for 5:30 pm in BSU's A.C. Jordan Arena.
