VIRGINIA STATE CAPITALIZES ON OPPORTUNITIES TO DEFEAT BOWIE STATE 75-58

Junior Cortney Baynard Paces Lady Bulldogs with 12 Points
Box Score (PETERSBURG, Va.) Virginia State took advantage of opportunities and handed Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs a 75-58 Northern Division defeat.  The loss puts the Bowie State record at 3-14, 3-7 CIAA and 2-2 North.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs took a three point lead with just over 14 minutes remaining in the first half on short baseline jumper by senior Chanita Jordan.  Virginia State's Marquilla Evans snuck inside for an easy layup at the 9:01 mark to give the Lady Trojans a six point advantage at 24-18.

A conventional 3-point play by Jordan cut the VSU lead down to three (26-23), but the Lady Trojans went on a 10-0 run to take a 36-23 lead.  Sophomore Brooke Miles ended the run with a pair of free throws and a baseline jumper.

Virginia State took advantage of second chance opportunities, seemed to score at will in the paint over the first 20 minutes and led 43-32 in halftime.  The Lady Trojans outscored the Lady Bulldogs 10-2 in the first half, second chance points and doubled BSU in the paint with a 20-10 first period advantage.

Bowie State shot just 35 percent (10-of-29) from the field in the first half compared to 55 percent (16-of-29) for Virginia State.

Senior Juliette Turner cut the Lady Bulldogs deficit to 49-43, but Virginia State went on another run to push the lead back to double-digits at 56-43.  Bowie State would get no closer for the remainder of the game.

The Lady Bulldogs shot well from the free throw, making 16-of-17 (94 percent) but managed only 39 percent from the field on 20-of-51 shooting.  Turnovers continue to be a problem for Bowie State as they committed over 20 (21) for the ninth time this season.

The Lady Trojans ended the contest shooting 49 percent from the field (26-of-53) that included 5-of-11 (46 percent) beyond the arc and 18-of-25 (72 percent) from the charity stripe. 

Virginia State (10-10, 2-6 CIAA, 1-2 North) was led by LaMesha Deal's double-double (16 points and 10 rebounds and Marquilla Evans with 10 points respectively.

Junior Cortney Baynard led Bowie State with 12 points.  The Lady Bulldogs trio of Jordan, Miles and junior Jasmine Jacobs added nine points each.

The Lady Bulldogs return home for a five-game home stand beginning with a Thursday (February 2nd) CIAA divisional clash with Virginia Union University.  Bowie State and the Lady Panthers will tip at 5:30 pm.
