SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Bowie State senior forward
Najee White tossed in a career-high 28 points to lead the Bulldogs, but host Shepherd University ran away with a 102-97 victory in the nightcap of the Clarion Hotel Tipoff Classic.
Bowie State fell behind 49-40 at intermission, committing 12 first half turnovers. The Bulldogs shot 13-of-31 (41.9 percent) from the field in the first 20 minutes compared to 19-of-44 (43.2 percent) for the Rams.
“Early on we didn't defend, we did an awful job defensively in the first 25-30 minutes of the game and dug ourselves into a hole”, said fourth year head coach
Darrell Brooks. “We made a good comeback and then became undisciplined on defense, gambled and put ourselves in bad position and they took advantage of it.
Shepherd maintained a double-digit lead most of the second half until a White layup pulled the Bulldogs with nine (90-81) with 3:32 left to play. Another White layup and a three-point play by senior guard
Bryan Wilson trimmed the Bowie State deficit to 90-86 less than a minute later.
Senior forward Chad Moore ran off the next four points for the Rams to push the home lead to eight 94-86.
The Bulldogs cut the Rams lead down to four points again at 99-95 with 17 seconds but from that point until the final buzzer, both teams pretty much exchanged trips to the free throw line.
Bowie State shot 59.5 percent from the floor in the second half, which included 3-of-10 beyond the arc. The Bulldogs did manage to cut down on turnovers (8) in the final 20 minutes, but Shepherd used BSU's miscues for 26 points on the night.
The Rams ended the non-conference contest shooting 44.2 percent (34-of-77) from the floor, which included 10-of-25 behind the 3-point line and 24-of-35 from the charity stripe.
Moore scored 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Shepherd. Junior guard Brantley Osborne added 22 points, while sophomore guard Austin Cunningham (13 points), sophomore forward Morgan McDonald (12), and junior guard Marcus Pilgrim (10) were in double figures.

Dameatric Scott and Wilson chipped in 15 and 11 points respectively for Bowie State.
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow (November 11) versus Alderson-Broaddus College at 4 pm to close out Bowie State's portion of the Classic. Alderson-Broaddus dropped an 80-79 decision to East Stroudsburg in the opening game of the Clarion Hotel Tipoff Classic.
