VIRGINIA UNION ROLLS TO KEY 66-39 DIVISION WIN OVER BOWIE STATE

Senior Chanita Jordan Leads BSU With 13 Points
Box Score (RICHMOND, Va.)  Virginia Union put themselves in a position to regain to top seed in next week's CIAA Tournament, beating the current division leading Bowie State handily by a score of 66-39.  The setback puts the BSU Lady Bulldogs record at 8-15 overall, 8-8 in the CIAA, but more importantly 7-3 in the Northern Division.  The Virginia Union win is the first for the Lady Panthers over Bowie State since the 2005-2006 season.

Bowie State held a 7-3 advantage before the Lady Panthers went on a 14-2 run over the next 4:34.  Freshman Alisha Burley stopped the run with a pair of free throws.  Virginia Union put together another run to open up a 23-12 advantage with just over four minutes left in the first half.

A 3-pointer by Bowie State sophomore Brooke Miles at the 2:05 mark trimmed the Virginia Union lead down to 25-17, but the Lady Panthers' Danisha Chandler and Vicki Collier scored the last four points to take a 29-17 lead into halftime.

Turnovers played a major part in Bowie State's first half struggles with the Lady Bulldogs committing 12 in the first 20 minutes.  Neither team shot very well in the first period.  VUU's Lady Panthers shot 38 percent from the field (12-of-32) and BSU's Lady Bulldogs shot 27 percent from the field (6-of-22).

Virginia Union (11-13, 8-7 in the CIAA and 6-3 in the North) extended their lead to 45-28 midway through the second half and cruised from there.

The Lady Panthers knocked down 52 percent of their shots in the second half (14-of-27) and were led in scoring by Valentina Wheeler with 19 points.  Danielle Ferguson and Vicki Collier also scored in double figures for Virginia Union, adding 16 and 15 points respectively.

The only Bowie State player to reach double figure scoring was senior Chanita Jordan with 13 points.  Jordan tied for team-high rebound honors along with sophomore Brooke Miles with six.

As a team, Bowie State shot 30 percent (8-of-27) in the second half and ended the evening shooting 29 percent from the field (14-of-49).

Bowie State, the current top team in the CIAA North, will now return home to wait for the Tournament pairings to be released on Sunday (February 26th).  The CIAA Tournament begins in Charlotte (NC) at the Bobcats Arena on Tuesday (February 28th).
