Second Half Cold Spell Sends Bowie State Lady Bulldogs to a 67-45 Loss to Virginia Union

Box Score BOWIE, Md. – The Virginia Union Lady Panthers avenged in earlier season loss to Bowie State, capturing a convincing 67-45 win over the Lady Bulldogs. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak, and sets Bowie State's season mark at 10-12 overall, 5-9 in the CIAA and 4-4 in the North.

"Quite honestly no one came to play tonight and Virginia Union simply outplayed us from start to finish", said Bowie State head coach Renard Smith.

Leading the Lady Bulldogs in scoring was junior Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. As a team, Bowie State had their second worst field goal shooting percentage game of the season (23.8 percent) making just 15-of-63.

The Lady Bulldogs led the first 10 minutes of the game until Virginia Union's Jasmine Dancy (Silver Spring, Md.) popped a jumper at the 9:31 mark to give the Lady Panthers at 14-13 advantage.

Virginia Union (8-14, 5-9 CIAA, 4-4 North) pushed that lead to 20-13 before BSU's Jasmine McIntosh (Bowie, Md.) stopped the 8-0 run, pulling the Lady Bulldogs within one at 21-20. However, the Lady Panthers made another run to take a 29-19 advantage by the 3:24 mark and went into halftime with a 29-25 lead.

Bowie State closed to within two points twice early in the second half, both times courtesy of Naylor. Naylor scored the Lady Bulldogs' first bucket of the second half on layup and hit a pair of free throws. Virginia Union's ShaHadah Barrett (Norfolk, Va.) sandwiched a layup between Naylor's points.

The Lady Bulldogs offense went cold over the 4:16 which allowed the Lady Panthers to go on a 6-0 run to open up a 37-29 lead by the 13:41 mark.

Virginia Union's lead grew to double-digits (42-31) a few possessions later after a Lady Panthers by Denesha Tatum (Baltimore, Md.).

Bowie State was able to get as close as seven (46-39) with 8:39 remaining in the game after a layup by junior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.), but that would be the last Lady Bulldogs field goal until a layup by junior Alisha Burley (Baltimore, Md.) at the 1:32 mark. By that time the games' outcome was inevitable.

Three Virginia Union players scored in double figures with Melyse Brown (Halifax, Va.) leading the Lady Panthers in scoring with 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Lady Walker (Cleveland, Ohio) tallied 16 points to go along with eight rebounds and a game-high five blocks. Dancy rounded out the Lady Panthers double figure scorers with 11 points and added seven rebounds to the final stat sheet.

Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs will have little time to rest before returning to the court on Wednesday (2/19) hosting nationally ranked Virginia State at 5:30 pm.
