Lady Bulldogs Drop 76-60 Home Finale to Chowan Hawks

BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State University women's basketball dropped a 76-60 home finale to the visiting Hawks of Chowan University on Saturday afternoon. PHOTOS

Senior Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) added 14 points and senior Jasmine McIntosh (Bowie, Md.) chipped in 13 points.

Rachel Gostomski (Newport News, Va.) led all players in the game with a game-high 25 points and five three-pointers.  Alisha Mobley (Winchester, Va.) posted a double-double performance with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Chowan had nine different players score in the contest.

Both teams exchanged points early in the first half.  With the score tied 6-6 at the 15:26 mark, Gostomski's three-pointer led to a 7-2 run and 13-8 advantage for the Hawks.   Bowie State pulled within one point (13-12) with 12:11 remaining before halftime before Chantel Roberts' (Suffolk, Va.) layup on the Hawks' next possession gave Chowan some cushion.

The Hawks battled for an eight point advantage (24-16) by the 7:45 mark and Gostomski's three-pointer pushed Chowan's lead to 29-18.  With Bowie State trailing 35-27 and 2:06 left to play before halftime, Mobley's three-pointer sparked a 10-5 run and contributed to Chowan's 45-32 lead at the end of the first half.

Chowan (13-11, 9-5 CIAA, 5-3 North) maintained a double digit lead until midway through the second half when Naylor's layup pulled the Lady Bulldogs within nine points (55-46).  Gostomski promptly nailed a three-pointer for Chowan to restore the commanding 58-46 advantage to the Hawks.

From that point forward, Chowan led by 10 or more points for the remainder of the contest and easily secured the 76-60.

The Lady Bulldogs really struggled to get shots to drop in the second half, making only 8-of-28 from the field (28.6 percent) and finished the afternoon at 37 percent on 20-of-54 shooting from the field. Bowie State missed all six of their second half 3-point attempts but managed 75 percent overall (18-of-24) at the free throw line.

The Hawks were pretty consistent the entire game, finishing up with a 45.5 percent field goal shooting percentage (25-of-55), which included 6-of-15 behind the arc. After shooting 75 percent at the free throw line in the first half, Chowan's free throw percentage dipped to 57.9 percent (11-of-19) over the final 20 minutes.

Bowie State will play their final two games of the regular season on the road, beginning with a Wednesday night contest at Virginia State with a scheduled 5:30 pm tip-off.
