Briscoe Leads Bulldogs with Career-High 23 in 85-72 Win Over Fayetteville State

BOWIE, Md. – The Bulldogs of Bowie State University got back to its winning ways, defeating the Fayetteville State University Broncos by a score of 85-72 in a very cold A.C. Jordan Arena on Wednesday night and improved to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Junior Michael Briscoe (Waldorf, Md.) led four Bowie State double figure scorers, pumping in a career-high 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, added five rebounds and tied his career-high in assists with seven. Senior Justin Beck (Ellicott City, Md.) notched his second double-double of the season, recording 20 points and 11 rebounds and senior Andre Jackson (Baltimore, Md.) contributed 11 points.

Junior Julian Livingston (Bowie, Md.) scored nine points in the win while junior Enouma Ebinum (Greenbelt, Md.) and sophomore Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) added six and five points respectively for the Bulldogs.

"Coming into the game we felt we had to do a good job defensively and knew we had to out-rebound them", said Bowie State head coach Darrell Brooks. "I thought we were terrific on offense shooting 50 percent from the field, 53 percent behind the 3-point line and 83 percent at the free throw line … So anytime you put those three numbers together like that, you should win a game."

As a unit, Bowie State made 28-of-56 field goals, which included 9-of-17 beyond the arc, 20-of-24 at the charity stripe and out-rebounded the Broncos 39-31.

The Broncos and Bowie State played to a 42-42 draw in the first half. BSU shot 48.3 percent (14-of-29) from the floor, but lost the points in the paint battle 18-8 in the opening half. Xavier Robinson (Fayetteville, N.C.) had a team-high 12 points at the break, including 75 percent (3-of-4) shooting from the three-point line.

The Bulldogs started the second half scoring 12 unanswered points in three minutes. Fayetteville State faced a 54-42 deficit with 16:52 left to play. The FSU frontcourt scored eight points, including two post scores from Michael Tyson (Kinston, N.C.) under the 15-minute mark.

Scores from sophomore Omari George (Baltimore, Md.) and a three-pointer from Andre Jackson pushed the BSU Bulldogs lead up to double digits (65-55) with 9:32 remaining.

Bowie State held off any rally attempts from Fayetteville State in the final 10-minutes of play. Defense and solid free throw shooting accounted for the win for the Bulldogs.

Fayetteville State (7-8 (2-4 CIAA) was led by Joshua Dawson (Kinston, N.C.) with a team-high 17 points, along with six rebounds and five assists. Robinson ended with 15 points and two boards. Tyson, Jason Lee (Raleigh, N.C.) and William Tibbs (Winston-Salem, N.C.) all had nine points.

Bowie State travels to Winston-Salem State University for a Wednesday (1/13) tilt against the Rams at 7:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the women.
