Bowie State Bulldogs Record 88-72 Home Opening Win Over Alderson Broaddus

BOWIE, Md. – Playing their first home game of the season, Bowie State University took full advantage of the friendly surroundings to claim an 88-72 non-conference decision over Alderson Broaddus University on Saturday afternoon at the A.C. Jordan Arena. The win snapped a two-game slide for the Bulldogs and also ended a three losing streak to Alderson Broaddus.    PHOTOS (Courtesy of Carroll Smith)

The Bowie State Bulldogs (2-2) led from beginning to end and were led by junior Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) with a game-high 21 points, which included a perfect 10-of-10 at the charity stripe. Seniors Michael Briscoe (Waldorf, Md.), Enuoma Ebinum (Greenbelt, Md.) and Brian Kelley (Lanham, Md.) tallied 14, 12 and 10 points respectively.

The Alderson Broaddus Battlers played a tight opening 20 minutes of basketball. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 32-23 lead with 3:00 to play in the opening half but the visitors responded with an 11-4 run to cut the lead to 36-32 at halftime.

To open up the second half, the Battlers tied the game at 43 three minutes in on an old fashioned three-point play by Dorrell Foster (Detroit, Mich.). Bowie State responded with an 8-0 run to make it 51-43 over the next four minutes but Alderson Broaddus would answer themselves scoring nine of the next 11 points to make it 53-52 by the 10:29 mark.

However, that would be as close as Alderson Broaddus would get as the Bulldogs pushed its lead to 66-56, with a 13-4 run over the next three minutes and didn't look back. The Battlers cut the Bulldogs advantage back down to single digits, 78-69, with just over a minute to play before Bowie State closed the game on a 10-3 run for the 16-point win.

Alderson Broaddus (1-3) was paced by Sanar Shamdeen (Springfield, Va.) with 16 points and added three rebounds and two assists. Foster chipped in 19 points to go along with six rebounds while Chavez Harper (Cleveland, Ohio) came off the bench to finish with 13 points and six boards.

In the game, Alderson Broaddus finished with a season-high 31 turnovers but out-rebounded the Bulldogs by 36-26. Bowie State turned the 31 AB turnovers into 30 points. The Battlers ended the contest with a 43.1 field goal shooting percentage (22-of-51) and converted 24-of-31 free throws (77.4 percent)

Bowie State shot 46.3 percent in the game and knocked down 35-of-40 from the charity stripe which was good for 87.5 percent.

The Bulldogs will be idle until returning to the hardwood after Thanksgiving, making a non-conference stop at West Chester (Pa.) University on Saturday (11/26). Game time against the Golden Rams is 3 p.m.
