Bowie State Lady Bulldogs Dispose of Puerto Rico Bayamon 58-51

BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State University women's basketball won its second game in a row and improved to 3-1 on the year after disposing of the University of Puerto Rico Bayamon by a score of 58-51 on Monday evening.
 
Senior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) notched a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds and junior Kyah Proctor added 10 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Senior Ashley Jennings (Newark, N.J.) grabbed a personal season-high 10 rebounds to go along with six points and freshman Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) corralled nine rebounds for the second game in a row and added six points and two assists to help Bowie State to the win.
 
Other scorers for Bowie State include juniors Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.), Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) and Pere Alexander (Baltimore, Md.) with eight, six and two points respectively, sophomore Lea Whitehead (Odenton, Md.) with four points and junior transfer Renee Kydd (Waldorf, Md.) chipped in three points.
 
Bowie State's defense, especially in the second and fourth quarters, made a real difference in the outcome of the game. The Lady Bulldogs held the Cowgirls to 20 percent shooting in quarter two (2-of-10) and 18.2 percent from the field in the fourth quarter on 2-of-11 shooting.
 
Bowie State held a slim 15-13 lead after the first quarter of play and took 27-18 advantage into halftime. The Lady Bulldogs and Cowgirls were almost even in first half shooting with Bowie State making 9-of-35 over the first 20 minutes compared to 7-of-27 for Puerto Rico Bayamon.
 
The Lady Bulldogs maintained a lead the majority of the third quarter before a pair of free throws by Daneishka Canales shifted the advantage over the Puerto Rico Bayamon (39-38) for the first time at the 3:03 mark. 
 
BSU's Jing tied the score at 39-39 on one of two free throws only to see the P.R. Bayamon take its largest lead of the night of four (44-40) with 2:06 left in the period. Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs closed the third quarter with a 4-0 run to tie the contest at 44-all.
 
The Lady Bulldogs opened the fourth quarter with a 7-2 spurt, capped off by a Clyde triple and a 51-46 advantage with 7:21 remaining in the contest. Bowie State would not allow Puerto Rico Bayamon any closer than four the rest of the way.
 
Bowie State ended the night shooting 18-of-62 from the floor (29 percent), 19-of-29 (65.5 percent) at the charity stripe and controlled the glass, out rebounding the opponent 50-34.
 
Overall, Puerto Rico Bayamon (2-3) made 17-of-52 field goals (32.7 percent), which included 5-of-20 behind the 3-point line (25 percent) and 12-of-17 at the free throw line (70.6 percent). Canales just missed a double-double for the Cowgirls, scoring a game-high 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds and Nicole Diaz added 16 points, on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and 7-of-9 free throws.
 
Before the Thanksgiving break, the Lady Bulldogs hit the road for a non-conference morning contest at Indiana (Pa.) on Wednesday (11/23) at 11 a.m. Bowie State defeated IUP in the season opener for both teams by a score of 59-45 on a neutral floor.
