Bowie State Lady Bulldogs Blow Big Lead and Lose 47-45 in OT to Elizabeth City State

BOWIE, Md. - What was supposed to be a Senior Day full of pride and indulgence would turn out to become disappointment for Bowie State women's basketball. The Lady Bulldogs (10-16, 3-13 CIAA, 1-9 North) lose in heartbreaking fashion to the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings (8-17, 4-12 CIAA, 3-7 North) 47-45 in overtime.

Shooting the ball was a struggle the entire game for both teams. Elizabeth City converted only 14-of-55 attempts (25.5 percent) from the field. On the other side of the box score, Bowie State converted an abysmal 16-of-75 shots from the field which translates into 21.3 percent. The missed baskets led to a lot of rebounds on both sides as the Lady Vikings finished with 44 and the Lady Bulldogs finished with 64.

Junior guard Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, Va.) led all scorers with 17 points and came down with nine rebounds. Other players who stepped up for Elizabeth City State included freshmen guard Jayln Brown (Williamston, N.C.), who finished second in team scoring with 12 points while senior guard Khadijah Bryant (New Bern, N.C.) finished with eight points to go along with a team-best 10 rebounds.

Bowie State sophomore guards Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) and Kyah Proctor (Capitol Heights, Md.) had an unusual day statistically. Colston finished with 11 points and nine rebounds despite shooting 4-of-17 from the field. Proctor didn't fare much better from the field, shooting 6-of-15 from the field even though she finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior forward Jourdan Stanhope (Columbus, Ohio) ended her final home contest with 11 points but only made 3 of her 19 shot attempts. The rest of Stanhope's points came from the free throw line (4-of-16).

After a dull first quarter, things picked up in the second quarter for the Lady Bulldogs. Fueled by a pivotal steal and layup off of ensuing fast break by Proctor, Bowie State would go on a 30-7 run that pushed their lead to 21 points at one point (38-17). From then on, the Lady Vikings would regain composure, slowly but surely chipping away at Bowie State's lead while the Lady Bulldogs failed to make shots that would seal their victory.

In the overtime, the Lady Vikings were able to get to the free throw line and make the most of their opportunities. Elizabeth City State missed all three of it extra stanza field goals but made 6-of-8 free throws. The Lady Bulldogs could only muster four points on 2-of-12 field goal percentage.

The Lady Bulldogs will enter next week's CIAA Tournament as the #6 Seed in the North and will face #3 Seed (South) Fayetteville State on Tuesday (2/23) at a time to be determined in Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena.
