Late Bowie State Drought Results in 82-65 Setback at Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A late second half Bowie State University drought results in a Bulldogs men's basketball 82-65 road setback at Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped a four-game Bulldogs win streak over the Golden Bulls, is the third straight setback for the Bulldogs and sets the team record at 5-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Seniors Dayshawn Wells and Ahmaad Wilson, both of Baltimore (Md.) led Bowie State's Bulldogs with 16 and 10 points respectively. Wells also pulled down seven rebounds, tying his career-high for the third time to go along with a pair of assists, one block and one steal. Sophomore Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, Md.) tied for game-high rebound honors with eight and added six points.

Senior Omari George (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in nine points, freshman Jacob Long (Washington, D.C.) also contributed eight points while sophomores David Belle (Hyattsville, Md.) and Cameron Hayes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) were responsible for six points each.

The Bulldogs trailed Johnson C. Smith 11-4 early in the first half but used a 9-1 burst to take a 13-12 lead by the 12-minute mark.

Following the 10-minute media timeout, a pair of free throws by Wells and Long gave the visiting Bulldogs a 22-16 advantage and Wilson drilled a 3-pointer gave Bowie State a 25-19 lead with 9:38 left in the first half.

Johnson C. Smith (8-2 / 1-1 CIAA) regained the lead at 27-25 following a 3-pointer by Roddric Ross forcing the Bowie State to call a timeout.

Bowie State's Belle capped off a 5-2 Bulldogs run to give the visitors a brief lead at 30-29 at the 3:45 mark of the opening period.

The lead would change hands four times before the intermission as Johnson C. Smith took a slim 40-39 lead into halftime.

The Golden Bulls and Bulldogs were even to start the second half, but Johnson C. Smith managed to take a 52-47 lead in to the first media timeout of the second stanza.

Bowie State used a 5-0 run to pull even at 52-all after a Cameron Hayes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) jumper at the 13:10 mark.

With the Golden Bulls holding a 57-56 lead at the 9:18 mark, both team hit a dry spell until a dunk by JCSU's Ross ended the drought. Johnson C. Smith pushed its lead to double-digits (66-56) by the 5:48 mark, forcing the Bulldogs to call a timeout.

A pair of Wells free throws stopped the JCSU run out of the timeout, but the Bulldogs would get no closer than nine for the remainder of the game. Bowie State went almost 12 minutes without a second half field goal from the 13:10 mark to 1:57.

Cayse Minor led four Johnson C. Smith players in double figures with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting to go along with six rebounds. Ross hit 6-of-11 field goals which included three 3-pointers and 4of-6 at the free throw line for 19 points. Robert Davis fell just short of a double-double, scoring 14 points and hauled down eight rebounds while Christian Kirchman chipped in 10 points in the victory.

Bowie State men's basketball will continue their CIAA Southern Division swing on Monday (December 18), playing a 7:30 p.m. contest at Winston-Salem State.
