Bowie State Bulldogs Fall Short at #5 Indiana (Pa.), 61-54

INDIANA, Pa. – Indiana (Pa.) held off a feisty Bowie State Bulldogs women's basketball team on Thursday evening and claimed a 61-54 victory and sweep the season series. The setback puts the Bowie State record at 6-2 while the Crimson Hawks stay perfect at 8-0.

After one quarter of action, Bowie State and Indiana (Pa.) were tied 15-all. IUP made 6-of-10 first quarter field goals compared to 6-of-17 for the Bulldogs.

Bowie State went into halftime with 26-25 lead over IUP, shooting 11-of-34 from the field (32.4 percent and were led by seniors Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) and Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) with eight and six points respectively.

Indiana (Pa.) made 9-of-20 first half field goals (45.0 percent) and were led by Carolyn Appleby with nine points while Megan Smith was responsible for seven in the first 20 minutes.

IUP regained the lead at 29-28 at the 6:07 mark following a layup by Halle Denman but a short jumper along the end line by graduate student Sade Chapman (Minneapolis, Minn.) switched the advantage back over to Bowie State. However, a triple by Lauren Wolisik followed by Brittany Robinson layup gave the Crimson Hawks a 34-31 advantage with 3:27 left in the third quarter, capping off a 7-0 IUP run.

Bowie State put a little run of their own together and pulled even at 38 on a Proctor jumper but a reverse layup by IUP's Smith shifted the advantage back over to #5 IUP at 40-38 as time expired in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to one point twice to begin the final stanza but couldn't clear that final hurdle. A layup by Bowie State redshirt sophomore Pere Alexander (Baltimore, Md.) cut the IUP lead to 43-42 at the 6:11 mark. A layup on the other end by IUP's Wolisik set the score at 45-42 but BSU's Chatman hit a short jumper with 5:26 would get the Bulldogs as close as they would get (45-44) for the remainder of the non-conference contest.

The Crimson Hawks went on an 8-0 run to give the home team a comfortable 53-44 lead with 2:40 remaining in the game.

However, the Bulldogs had one more run left in them and pulled within four at 57-53 after a deep 3-pointer with 22 seconds left on the game clock by senior Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.).

Proctor tallied a personal season-high of 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field. Chatman recorded her first double-double of the season, chipping in 13 points and hauled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
