Virginia Union Demolishes Bowie State 100-67

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Union University men's basketball team were clicking on all cylinders on Wednesday evening in Barco-Stevens Hall, mauling Bowie State University 100-67. The setback drops the Bulldogs to 9-14 overall, 6-7 in league play and 2-5 in the division. This was the worst loss to Virginia Union since the 2007-2008 season.
 
Junior Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Bulldogs with 12 points, while senior Brian Kelley (Lanham, Md.) and junior Omari George (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively in the loss. George, senior Enuoma Ebinum (Greenbelt, Md.) and redshirt freshman David Belle (Hyattsville, Md.) grabbed a team-high four rebounds each in the loss.
 
The Bulldogs shot 36.2 percent (25-of-69) from the floor and made six of 19 3-pointers (31.6 percent). Bowie State was 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from the free throw line.
 
Virginia Union held a decisive advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Bowie State 50-29.
 
Virginia Union (20-5, 12-1 CIAA, 1-1 North) got off to fast start and held a 13-7 advantage in the games' first four minutes. Just like game one between these two teams, Virginia Union owned the glass in the first four minutes with a 10-1 advantage. The Panthers extended their lead 27-18 following a Bowie State foul and technical foul at the 9:36 mark of the first half.
 
The Panthers lead ballooned to 21 points (41-20) by the 3:05 mark of the first half and division leading Virginia Union walked into halftime with a comfortable 43-28 lead.
 
Virginia Union picked up where they left off in the first 20 minutes and kept their foot on the gas the rest of the way.
 
Ray Anderson (Wilmington, Del.) and John Mitchell (Harlem, N.Y.) torched the twine for 23 and 20 points respectively to lead Virginia Union, checking out of the game with over five minutes to go. Marcus Hoosier was the games' leading rebounder with 10.
 
The Panthers ended the rout shooting 56.7 percent from the floor (34-of-60), which included 6-of-11 beyond the arc (54.5 percent) and 26-of-37 at the charity stripe (70.3 percent). Virginia Union also held advantages on points in the paint (52-32), points off turnovers (21-17), second chance points (18-11), fast break points (38-22) and bench points (40-24).
 
The Bulldogs will close out its home portion of the regular season on Saturday (February 11th) hosting the Chowan University Hawks at 4 p.m. in the A.C. Jordan Arena.
