Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions Hand Bowie State 70-64 Division Setback

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Bowie State University and Lincoln University of Pennsylvania entered Saturday's (1/13) CIAA divisional opener for both teams with five-game winning streaks. Unfortunately for Bowie State, Lincoln (Pa.) kept its streak in tack with a 70-64 victory. The loss sets Bowie State's overall record at 12-4, 5-2 in CIAA play and 0-1 in the North.

Graduate student Sade Chatman (Minneapolis, Minn.) led the Bulldogs with 19 points (tying her season high) to go along with three blocks, two assists and a pair of steals. Senior Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) tallied 15 points while the senior of Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) and Ty-Nita Baker chipped in a dozen points each in the loss.

Both teams were as cold as the temperature inside the Lincoln (Pa.) Manuel Rivero Hall as Bowie State shot 30.8 percent from the floor (4-of-13) compared to 16.7 percent (2-of-12) for the Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions. The Lady Lions had almost as many offensive rebounds in the first quarter (6) than the Bulldogs had in total rebounds (7).

The Lady Lions took a 24-19 lead before a Baker jumper in the paint stop the 5-0 run. Lincoln (Pa.) maintained their momentum and took a 31-21 advantage onto halftime. Bowie State slightly improved its shooting percentage in the second quarter but Lincoln (Pa.) greatly improved its shooting to 50 percent (7-of-14).

Lincoln (Pa.) extended its lead to 44-29 by the (4:50) media timeout and led 52-37 by the end of the third quarter. The Lady Lions continued to improve their field goal shooting percentage, moving up to 61.5 percent in the quarter (8-of-13)

The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to nine 56-47 on a conventional three-point play by Proctor at the 6:38 mark of the fourth quarter. A pair of Proctor free throws with 1:16 to go in regulation pulled Bowie State within three (62-59) and another pair of Proctor free throws made it a one-point game (62-61) with 55.5 seconds remaining.

After the Lincoln (Pa.) timeout, Lincoln's Shecquan Bailey drilled a corner triple but BSU's Colston knocked down a 3-pointer on the other end to set the score at 65-64 with 24 seconds remaining. The Lady Lions' Tiera Pendleton answered with a breakaway layup and Bailey followed with a 3-point play to account for the final margin of 70-64.

Lincoln (Pa.) (11-4, 6-1 CIAA, 1-0 North) was led by Pendleton's game-high 27 points while Bailey and Shahra Madison added 15 and 13 points respectively.
