ERIE, Pa. – Bowie State University men's basketball led Gannon from the opening tip until the final buzzer and came away with its third win in a row, defeating the Golden Knights 56-47 on Wednesday night in the Hammermill Center.
Juniors
Rinardo Perry and
David Belle lead the Bulldogs with 10 and nine points respectively. Junior
Saiquan Jamison also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and tied his career-high in blocks (for the fifth time) with three. Junior
Juwun Smith tallied six points while Jamison added five and sophomores
Justin Route and Keith Duffin were responsible for four points each.
The Bulldogs finished the contest shooting 44 percent from the field (21-of-48), 73 percent at the free throw line (11-of-15), blocked a season-best seven shots and held a 31-27 advantage on the glass. Bowie State also held advantages in points in the paint (34-32), points off turnovers (15-12), fast break points (10-4) and bench points (28-17).
The Bulldogs took an early 10-4 lead at the first media timeout of the game at 15:48 on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor and a pair of free throws. Following the timeout, Gannon doubled up Bowie State to close the gap to 14-12 with 11:01 left in the first half.
Bowie State used an 8-0 run to push its lead to 20-12 before Gannon's Kofi Mills stopped the Golden Knights seven plus minute scoring drought with a layup at the 5:21 mark. The Golden Knights of Gannon outscored the Bulldogs 15-10 to close out the first 20 minutes of non-conference action, but Bowie State carried a 30-25 lead into halftime.
A conventional 3point play by Perry at the 12:06 mark gave Bowie State a double-digit lead at 43-31 and the Bulldogs extended its lead to a game-high 14 points (49-35) by the 8:49 mark of the second half.
Gannon (2-3) put together a 14-6 surge to narrow their deficit to 49-44 with 3:05 remaining in the game only to watch Bowie State go on a 7-0 run to push the Bulldogs lead back to double digits at 56-44, closing out any Golden Knights thoughts of a game-winning rally.
Darryl Porter paced the Golden Knights with a game-high 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and DeAnte Cisero came off the Gannon bench to chip in 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. As a team, Gannon wrapped up the night shooting 19-of-47 from the field (40 percent) and 7-of-13 (54 percent) at the free throw line.
The Bulldogs will be idle for the next six days before returning to action at home against Shippensburg on Wednesday (December 5) night at 7 p.m. in the A.C. Jordan Arena.
