Bowie State Bulldogs Erase Deficit and Top Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings 63-61

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Senior Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) scored a team-high 18 points and fellow senior Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) added 16 points to help Bowie State rally to claim a 63-61 win at Elizabeth City State on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in 12 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in the key CIAA Northern Division win.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-3 lead by the first media timeout (4:53), but the Lady Vikings took their first lead after a 3-pointer by Tamara Harvey at the 3:24 mark. Bowie State responded with a 4-0 run only to see Harvey drill another triple to tie the game at 12-all. However, back-to-back 3-pointers by the Bulldogs shifted the advantage back over to Bowie State at 18-12, forcing Elizabeth City State to burn a timeout.

Elizabeth City State (9-11, 2-6 CIAA, 0-4 North) opened its largest lead of the first half at 32-29 and carried that advantage into halftime. The Lady Vikings hit 11-of-26 first half field goals which included 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) behind the 3-point line.

On the top half of the box score, Bowie State made 44 percent of its first half field goals (11-of-25), which included a blistering 83.3 percent (5-of-6) beyond the arc.

Elizabeth City State's lead grew to double digits (45-35) by the 3:22 mark of the third quarter and carried a 50-44 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs really struggled to find the mark in the second half, making just 8-of-27 field goals (29.6 percent) but managed to pull it together in the final moments of the game.

Bowie State (14-6, 7-4 CIAA, 2-3 North) trimmed the deficit to 51-48 at the 6:49 mark of the fourth quarter and doubled their lead to 57-51 with 3:21 to go in the game. A pair of Proctor free throws closed the gap to 57-55.  A Williams layup at the 1:50 mark tied the contest at 57-all.

Tamara Harvey made one of two free throws to shift the advantage back over to Elizabeth City State, but that lead didn't last long.

Bowie State senior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) drilled a huge 3-pointer with 36 seconds remaining in the game and the Bulldogs never surrendered the lead after that.

Elizabeth City State's Jalyn Brown led all scorers with a game-high 21 points and Anaya Eason contributed 13 points. Harvey and Devona Stell scored eight points each for the Vikings. Stell pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds in the loss.

Bowie State women's basketball return to action at home on Wednesday, February 7th, hosting Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. The Bulldogs and Lady Lions will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. in BSU's A.C. Jordan Arena.
