SALISBURY, N.C. – Seniors
Juwan Smith (Lexington Park, Md.) and
Cameron Hayes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) combined for 37 points to lead Bowie State, but the Livingstone came away with the late game win by a score of 70-68 on Monday evening.
Smith finished with a team-high 20 points while Hayes finished the night with 17 points. Freshman
Khalil Williams (Annapolis, Md.) contributed nine points and senior
Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, Md.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and chipped in seven points. As a team, Bowie State finished the evening shooting 33 percent from the field (19-of-57) and won the battle on the glass 45-33.
The Bulldogs carried a 44-30 advantage into halftime, making 11-of-29 first half field goals that included 9-of-16 beyond the arc. Bowie State knocked down 13-of-19 at the charity stripe and outrebounded the Blue Bears 24-15 over the first 20 minutes of play.
Livingstone opened the second half with a 4-0 run forcing Bowie State to call an early timeout at the 18:04 mark. Coming out of the under 15-minute media timeout (14:58), Bowie State pushed the lead back to double figures at 51-40 after Livingstone was able to trim the Bulldogs lead down to 49-40.
Livingstone (3-2 / 0-1 CIAA) trimmed the deficit to seven (54-47) and closed to within three at 56-53 by the under 10 media timeout and down to 59-58 with 7:01 to go on the New Trent Gymnasium scoreboard following a 3-pointer by Cameron Carpenter.
With the score tied at 60-all at the 5:28 mark of the second half, a pair of Hayes free throws and a Jamison tip-in gave Bowie State some breathing room at 64-60 at the final media timeout with 4:42 left on the clock.
The Blue Bears put together a 6-2 run to tie the game at 66. A Belle steal a Smith layup shifted to lead back to Bowie State at 68-66 only to have Malik Smith stick a jumper with 51 seconds remaining to create the games' X tie. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Livingstone's Martel Handley hit a fade away jumper from the foul line with 2.5 seconds remaining to give the 70-68 victory to the Blue Bears.
Lydell Elmore led the Blue Bears with 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field and Roger Ray added 15 points for Livingstone. Navar Elmore tallied 10 points and Carpenter scored 11 points. Livingstone closed out the game shooting 54 percent from the field (30-of-56).
Bowie State (2-4 / 0-2 CIAA) returns home to the A.C. Jordan Arena on Wednesday (November 27) to host the University of the District of Columbia in non-conference, cross-town rivalry. Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m.
