RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bowie State University Bulldogs combined a strong defense with a balanced offensive attack to claim a 59-48 road win over Shaw University on Saturday (12/7) to remain unbeaten at 7-0 on the season. Senior forward
Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) recorded another double-double with team-highs of 17 points, 10 rebounds and added six steals. Sophomore
Drew Calhoun (New Carrollton, Md.) scored 15 points (tying her career-high and was 5-of-7 from behind the arc while junior
Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, Md.) tallied 11 points and pulled down six rebounds.
Dejoria Howard led all score with 21 points and grabbed six rebounds while Tyra Sinclair and Diamonique Kennedy both scored eight a piece. The loss dips the Lady Bears to 3-4 overall.
Bowie State held a 10-0 advantage in second chances, 22-10 in points off turnovers as the Bulldogs were 48 percent from the field, 50 percent from long distance and 78 percent from the free throw line. Good defense by both teams showed a low-scoring first quarter but the Bulldogs gained an 8-4 lead over Shaw with 3:30 left. A layup from Kennedy pulled Shaw within two however, a three ball from Calhoun extended BSU's lead as the Bulldogs led 14-9 over the Lady Bears after one period.
BSU caught fire in the second quarter, stretching its lead 20-11 over Shaw with 7:20 remaining as Calhoun connected on another 3-pointer. The Bulldogs scored seven unanswered points until a jumper from Howard snapped the scoring drought for Shaw with the Lady Bears trailing 24-13 at the 5:03 mark. BSU were dominant on both ends of the floor and owned a 31-17 lead at the break.
Both teams traded baskets to begin the third quarter and the Lady Bears cut the deficit to single digits when Howard hit a jumper to pull Shaw within 36-28 with 2:22 left. Bowie State quickly anchored a 6-0 run with back-to-back 3-pointers from Calhoun leaving the Lady Bears trailing 42-30 at the end of the third stanza.
The Bulldogs held its largest lead of the contest in the fourth quarter at 21-points capped off by a layup from Williams with 2:18 remaining in regulation. Although the Lady Bears scored the game's last eight points, it would not be enough as Bowie State's hot streak continues.
The Bulldogs will return to action Thursday (12/12) hosting Johnson C. Smith University at the Prince George's Community College in Novak Field House. Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm.
