Bowie State Bulldogs Earn Hard-Fought 100-87 Non-Conference Road Decision at Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bowie State Bulldogs captured a 100-87 overtime road win at Shaw University on Saturday afternoon and were led by four double figure scorers. The 100 points were the most scored by the Bulldogs this season and marked the first time since 2017 that Bowie State reached the century mark while improving its season record to 5-5 overall.

"I was pleased how we finished the game and thought we did a better job down the last 8-9 minutes of regulation and into overtime defensively", said Head Coach Darrell Brooks. "We held them without a field goal in overtime and Juwan along with Cam really carried us offensively."

Senior Juwan Smith (Lexington Park, Md.) tied his career-high of 27 points to lead the Bulldogs while fellow senior Cameron Hayes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) recorded a personal season-high of 25 points. Seniors David Belle (Hyattsville, Md.) along with Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, Md.) chipped in 17 and 12 points respectively in the win.

Bowie State jumped out to early leads of 9-2 and 20-13 at the 8:57 media timeout. The Shaw offense caught fire after the break being fueled by back-to-back three-point plays from Greyson Kelley, followed by Nigel Martin's six straight points, cutting the Bulldogs lead to 25-21 with 5:00 remaining in the half.

Dhashon Dyson gave Shaw its first lead of the contest at 30-27 with 2:50 left off back-to-back three-point baskets. BSU's Hayes wouldn't let the Bulldogs stay down long as he answered with a flurry of three-point baskets to put the Bulldogs ahead 39-37.  Bowie State then split a pair at the line to go ahead 40-39 at the break after Dyson tied the game again at 39-39.

Shaw (3-4) opened the second half on a quick 4-0 run with baskets from Martin and Kelley to force an early BSU timeout less than a minute into the half with Shaw leading 43-40. Shaw remained hot from outside at Dyson and Martin hit back-to-back three's pushing the Bears lead to 49-42.  Imani Miller added a three of his own from the top of the key beating the shot clock to put Shaw ahead 56-49.

While leading 58-49 at the 13:20 mark, the Shaw offense finally cooled off as Bowie State started its comeback run trimming the Bears lead to 58-54 before eventually tying the contest at 62-62 with 9:05 left in regulation via a Jamison layup. With the game tied again at 64-all, the freshman tandem of Martin and Dyson went on a 7-2 run to give Shaw a 71-66 lead with 4:57 remaining in regulation.

But again, the Bulldogs would not go down easily eventually pulling ahead 77-73 before Martin ended the run with four straight points to pull Shaw within 79-77 with 1:27 left.  After falling behind 81-77, Martin connected again from outside to trim the Bears deficit to 81-80. Bowie State missed on the other end giving Shaw a chance to retake the lead inside the final minute. The chance would fade away quickly as Bowie State's Smith stole the ball and raced down the sideline for a fast break layup for the Bulldogs with 25.4 left in regulation. Down three Shaw called up the tying play missing on its first attempt. Shaw maintained possession DaVaughn Kelsie collected the offensive rebound and found Martin in the deep corner who tied the contest at 83-83 with 9.7 on the clock. BSU advanced the ball to half court before calling a timeout with 3.4 left. The Bulldogs last second attempt bounced off the rim, sending the game into overtime.

The extra period started out close, but eventually BSU grabbed the lead for good with back-to-back three-point baskets putting the Bulldogs ahead 93-87 with 1:55 remaining in overtime. Free throws the rest of the way pushed the Bowie State lead to double digits providing the 13-point victory for the visiting Bulldogs.

Martin finished with a game-high 34 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Dyson followed with 19 points. while Kelley added 13 points and Miller contributed 11 points to round out the double-figure scoring for Shaw.
