ETTRICK, Va. – Bowie State's Bulldogs were held to a season-low in points in Wednesday's (2/20) divisional road game at Virginia State but managed to come away with the 43-33 victory. The win improves the Bulldogs to 21-4 overall, 13-3 in CIAA play and 6-3 in the North.
Redshirt senior
Pere Alexander recorded a game-high 18 points to lead Bowie State and junior
Dynaisha Christian was a beast on the glass for the Bulldogs, pulling down 10 rebounds. Junior
Kyaja Williams added 12 points in the win to go along with four steals, two assists and a pair of blocks.
The Bulldogs find point hard to find early in the game and finally scored on an
Amel Duggins free throw at the 3:56 mark but trailed the Trojans 5-1. Bowie State made just 1 -of-7 field goals in the first quarter and trailed 7-4.
Senior
Lea Whitehead scored Bowie State's first points of the second quarter with a soft jumper from the end line. An Alexander jumper in the paint at the 5:31 mark cut the VSU lead to 11-8. Alexander pulled the Bulldogs within one (11-10) with 2:39 left in the first half and back-to-back field goals by Williams gave Bowie State its first lead heading into halftime at 14-11
Bowie State extended its lead to 19-13 at the 8:14 mark of the third quarter following a Williams layup and free throw. The Bulldogs held a 25-17 advantage out of the under-five media timeout.
Back-to-back buckets by Virginia State's Chrisanna Green and a pair of free throws by Yazman Hannah closed the Trojans deficit to 25-23 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. However, the Trojans trailed at the end of the quarter 29-25.
Two free throws by Autumn Hopson followed by a Green layup tied the game at 29-all at the 9:04 mark of the final quarter.
Bowie State used a 5-0 run to get a little breathing room at 34-29 after a couple of layups by freshman
Chyna Butler and a Williams free throw.
Bowie State outscored Virginia State 9-4 to earn another victory for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs held the Trojans to single-digit scoring in every quarter except the third.
Virginia State (11-14, 5-11 CIAA, 3-6 North) were paced by Green's 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season at Elizabeth City State on Saturday (February 23) with tip time set for 2 p.m. in the R.L. Vaughan Center.
