Indiana (PA) Tops Bowie State Women's Baketball 67-60 in Atlantic Region Opener

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Bowie State University women's basketball team season comes to an end following a 67-60 defeat in the hands of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament.

Sophomore Talanya Hutton had a career game after scoring 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds, which was also a career high for Hutton. Redshirt senior Pere Alexander led the Bulldogs in scoring with 17 points. Carolyn Appleby led all the scoring with 19 big points and six rebounds to go with three assists for the IUP Crimson Hawks.

After Appleby opened the scoring with a three pointer, junior Shawnkia McCallum answered with a three of her own at 9:07 mark in the first period. Appleby then converted on a layup following McCallum's turnover to push IUP's lead to 7-3. Junior Kyaja Williams' layup cut the deficit to 7-5 before junior Dynaisha Christian tied the game at the 7-minute mark. IUP went on a 6-0 run following a Lauren Wolosik three pointer to end the first period up 15-9.

Alexander started heating up when she knocked down a jumper at 8:04 but IUP's Natalie Myers answered right back with three to take the lead up to 19-13. Alexander converted on a mid-range jumper after missing a three in the earlier possession before Brittany Robinson reverse layup made it 21-15 at 6:06 in the second period. Hutton's layup and a free shot cut the lead to 21-18 before Alexander knocked down her third field goal of the half but this time it was a three pointer. Both teams traded baskets for the rest of the first half with Hutton dominating inside and Alexander 4-9 from outside.

Christian's layup gave Bowie State's its first lead of the game at 34-33 to commence the third period before Wolosik knocked down another three-pointer to regain the lead 36-35 at 6:30. After junior Amel Duggins gave the Bulldogs the lead with a three, Natalie Myers answered with a corner three for the Hawks. Third period had offensive rhythm as both squads had answers for everything thrown at them. Lexi Griggs layup with 18 seconds left gave IUP two (47-45) into the final period.
Alexander came out firing in the fourth period after knocking down another three to give BSU 48-47 lead. After both teams traded turnovers, Appleby, who was deadly from behind the arch, hit another three at 9:10 before Wolosik sank a three of her own. After back to back layups by Hutton to give BSU 57-55 lead, IUP closed the game with 12-3 run over the 5:38. Appleby controlled the tempo and made crucial free throws for the Hawks down the stretch.

Bowie State made it four straight seasons with 20 or more wins, closing out the season at 22-6.
