BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State University men's basketball, had a scoring night to remember, as the Bulldogs defeated Shaw 96-69 in a conference matchup. With the victory, Bowie State even its conference record at 3-3 and improved to 11-8 overall.
Senior
Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, Md.) led five Bulldogs in scoring with 20 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Senior
Rinardo Perry (Washington, D.C.) and junior
Kani Coles (Baltimore, Md.) both followed up with 15 points each. Senior Cameron Haynes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) scored 14 points and junior
Justin Route (Washington, D.C.) contributed 11 points.
"Today's game was probably our best start to finish game of the season", said Bowie State Head Coach
Darrell Brooks. "Our guys locked into the scouting report, did a good job talking and we were really aggressive offensively."
Bowie State started the game hitting on all cylinders, which resulted in a 21-5 lead at the 13:40 mark, which then turned into a 38-12 lead with 5:30 left the play in the first half. Bowie State was scoreless over a small period of time, but the Bulldogs added to its lead as Jamison knocked down two free throws. Perry scored a layup, and Jamison converted on a tip in to close the half, with a 44-15 cushion.
Besides holding the 29-point lead at halftime, Bowie State held the advantage in points in the paint (22-4), second-chance points (12-0), and points off the bench (20-8) over the first 20 minutes. The second half was another version of the first half, with Bowie State pouring in points. The Bulldogs had a 35-point lead at the 14-minute mark, on their way to a 96-69 victory.
Overall, Shaw (4-13 / 1-8 CIAA) played catch-up the entire game. They would make a run here-and-there at the end, but it was too little too late to get back into the game. As a team, Shaw shot 33 percent from the field (23-of-69), 19 percent from long-distance (5-of-27) and made 76 percent (16-of-21) off its free-throws
Nigel Martin led four Bears in double-figure scoring with 25 points. DeVaughn Kelsie followed up with 16 points while and Greyson Kelley and Marvis Odia both chipped in 12 points each.
Bowie State shot 54 percent from the field overall (37-of-68), 30 percent from long-distance (6-of-20) and connected on 80 percent (16-of-20) of its free throws. The Bulldogs maintained its advantage in points in the paint (48-30), points off turnovers (20-14), second-chance points (22-13) and bench points (48-28).
On Monday (1/20), Bowie State will host Saint Augustine University in another conference battle beginning at 6 p.m.
