Box Score BOWIE, Md. - In the second of two regular-season meetings and 39th matchup overall between Bowie State University and Winston-Salem State University, the Bulldogs defeated the Rams by a score of 75-72. The win advances the Bulldogs record to 9-6 on the season while the Rams drop to 5-6 overall.
In the first, the Bulldogs and Rams kept the score even, as the lead changed hands four times. The most significant point of the half was at the 1:26 mark when the Bowie State took a nine-point lead after redshirt freshman David McCollough (Bowie, Md.) connected on a 2-point jump shot. After
Justin Route knocked down a jump shot with six seconds remaining in the period, Bowie State entered the locker room with a 41-35 lead.
Over the first 20 minutes, the Bulldogs knocked down 49 percent of its first-half shots (16-of-33), which included 3-of-10 (30 percent) behind the three-point line and made 67 percent of its free throws (6-of-9).
In the second half, things got a bit interesting. The Bulldogs held the lead until the 8:30 mark when Winston-Salem State's Jaylen Alston scored by a tip-in. After that, the edge would go back and forth. As the game was tied at 60 apiece after Bowie State senior
Yohance Fleming (Bowie, Md.) made a free throw, senior Cameron Haynes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) followed that up with a jump shot--and then a 3-pointer soon after that.
Bowie State's five-point lead quickly evaporated, as WSSU's Mason Harrell responded with a thunderous dunk, and Robert Colon converted on three free throws, allowing the Rams to tie the game at 67-all. Thirty seconds later, BSU's Haynes knocked down a jumper to help Bowie State regain the lead.
Colon made a layup to tie the game back up. After that, senior
Rinardo Perry (Washington, D.C.) scored on a layup, and senior
Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, Md.) made both of his free throw attempts to give the Bulldogs the 71-68 lead for good.
Hayes led three Bulldogs in double-figure scoring with a personal season-high 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field while Jamison added 13 points, and Perry chipped in 11 points. As a team, the Bowie State shot 49 percent for the game (29-of-59), 25 percent from deep (4-of-16) and converted 68 percent of their free throws (13-of-19).
For Winston-Salem State, Robert Colon led the Rams with 20 points. Jaylen Alston and Dontae Caldwell chipped in nine points each, and Julius Barnes scored eight points. As a team, the Rams shot 41 percent from the field (24-of-58), 28 percent from long distance (7-of-25) and knocked down 77 percent of their free throws (17-of-22).
The Bulldogs will hit the road for a CIAA matchup at Johnson C. Smith University on Thursday (January 9) followed by games at Claflin (January 11) and Fayetteville State (January 13).
