Bowie State Ends Regular Season with a 60-56 Win Over Lincoln (Pa.)

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State women's basketball team stopped a late comeback against Lincoln (Pa.) University and held for a 60-56 victory on Saturday (2/22) afternoon. Senior Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) led all scorers with 17 huge points and added eight rebounds while fellow senior Shawnkia McCallum (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in 15 points. Senior Dynaisha Christian (Pocomoke, Md.) recorded a double-double scoring 11 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. BSU ends the regular season 22-4 (12-3 CIAA) while Lincoln (Pa.) moves to 23-5 (12-3 CIAA).  SENIOR DAY PHOTOS
 
Bowie State played some tough defense and a balanced offensive attack to claim the win. As a team, the Bulldogs held the Lions to shooting just 34 percent (17-of-50) from the floor while shooting 35 percent (21-of-60) from the floor in the game. LUPA also had a balance scoring with three players in double figures. DeAshia Young and Shantel Cheeks both had 12 points while Kwanzaa Murray had 11 points. Bowie State struggled at the free throw line once again after going 14-of-30 (46.7 percent) in the game.
 
The Bulldogs took control of the game early after scoring the first six points of the game. Lincoln (Pa.) quickly erased the deficit by going on an 11-0 run after Janya Lilly knocked down a three pointer at 2:51. Bowie State would later counter that with its own 9-0 run after sophomore Drew Calhoun (New Carrollton, Md.) deep ball made it 15-11 to end the first quarter.
 
The second period had a similar look as both team went at it early. Murray's deep ball gave the Lions 19-16 lead with 7:51 remaining. Bowie State quick 5-0 run after Christian went 1-of-2 at the line that gave the Bulldogs 28-23 lead at 1:14. Lincoln (Pa.) would go into the half without made field goal for the last 5:02 while the Bulldogs increased its lead to 29-23.
 
Murray opened the scoring in the third quarter after hitting a jumper before Cheeks tied everything up at 32-32 with a jumper of her own at 4:23. Calhoun's three gave the Bulldogs 35-32 on the next play. From there, Bowie State would clamp down to hold 40-35 lead into the fourth period.
 
The fourth quarter was the most competitive as both team scored 20 points but the Bulldogs held an advantage in the previous three quarters. BSU also outscored LUPA in the paint 20-12 while scoring 28-16 in points off turnovers. McCallum gave Bowie State their biggest lead of the game 55-44 with 1:15 remaining. However, the Lions would later stage a rally after Cheeks knocked down two deep balls to cut the deficit to 58-54. The Bulldogs did just enough to fend off LU as they held on to a 60-56 win. Bowie State struggled at the free throw line once again after going 14-of-30 (46.7 percent) in the game.
 
The Bulldogs will enter the CIAA Tournament in Charlotte (N.C.) as the No. 3 seed in the North and will face Shaw (No. 6 South) on Tuesday (2/25) at a time to be determined.
