SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV – Three Bowie State players scored in double figures, including two 20-point performances from junior
Quinton Drayton (Bowie, MD) and sophomore
Ayan Teel (Bowie, MD) but the Bulldogs fell short in an 88-81 overtime decision Saturday night to conclude the Dave Russell Conference Challenge at the Butcher Athletic Center.
Saturday's tilt was a complete turnaround for the Bulldogs who fell 96-56 in a lopsided affair against Mercyhurst during the opener. BSU dips to 0-2 on the season while Shepherd now stands 1-1 on the year.
Redshirt sophomore
Joshua Cornish (Baltimore, MD) joined Drayton and Teel in double figures with 13 points while Drayton also grabbed 11 rebounds – his first double-double on the season. Additionally, Teel finished with nine assists on the night.
Both teams were evenly matched in the opening half that featured three ties up until the 2:25 mark as Bowie State and Shepherd exchanged 3-pointers but the Bulldogs scored five unanswered points in the final seconds of the half to take a 31-26 lead at the break.
Bowie State would hold on to their lead for the first six minutes of the second half before the Rams tied the game at 41-all on a 3-pointer. The lead changed twice but Shepherd managed to outscore the Bulldogs 25-16 to take an eight-point lead with 2:03 left in regulation. BSU never wavered and chopped at the deficit thanks to hot shooting Drayton who registered five points down the stretch, followed by a jumper from Teel that would send the game into overtime at 71-all.
In the extra frame, the Rams scored eight-straight to take a 79-71 lead with 2:36 left. The Bulldogs cut the lead to four on two free throws from Drayton but Shepherd responded with a 9-6 spread capped off by a pair of free throws that would give the Rams the win over Bowie State.
BSU was outscored 17-10 in the extra time, shooting 40-percent from the field, going 2-2 at the free throw line but missed four 3-pointers compared to the Rams who connected 3-5 from the field, 1-3 from behind the arc and 10-of-14 at the free throw line (71-percent).
Bowie State will return to action Friday, Nov. 19 when the Bulldogs play host to Indiana (PA) at 6 p.m. from A.C. Jordan Arena.
