BOWIE, Md. –Junior Quinton Drayton (Bowie, MD) led a trio of Bulldogs in double figures with 19 points, but the Bowie State men's basketball dropped an 80-69 decision in home action Sunday afternoon inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
The loss dips the Bulldogs to 0-6 on the season while Augusta improves to 5-0 on the season.
In addition to Drayton's 19-point performance, junior Keith Duffin, Jr. (Fort Meade, MD) charted 18 points and seven rebounds while sophomore David McCollough (Bowie, MD) chipped in 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Jaguars took a 12-5 lead over Bowie State during the games opening minutes. A jumper from Drayton led to the Bulldogs holding a 6-3 run (15-9) but Augusta then built a double digit lead halfway through the first stanza after a fastbreak layup from Darren Lucas-White.
The Bulldogs trailed by as many as 12 points before a free-throw in the final seconds of the first half cut BSU's deficit (42-31) at halftime.
Augusta used a 13-4 spread to stretch its lead to 20 points – the largest of the game until Bowie State slowly chipped away at the Jag's lead for most of the half. Although both teams scored 38 points apiece in the second half, the Bulldogs pulled within six points of the Jag's after two free throws from Drayton and then again with freebies from McCollough but Augusta hit back-to-back jumpers to add cushion to their lead in which they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
BSU held advantages in points in the paint, 30-29, second chances (17-1) and 24 points from their bench. Meanwhile, AU scored 19 points off of 11 turnovers from the Bulldogs and held a 11-0 ratio in fastbreak points. Bowie State shot 37-percent from the field (23-62) compared to the Jaguars' 52-percent (27-52).
Bowie State will look to snap its six-game losing skid with a road contest at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Dec. 4. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
