Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Big Fourth Quarter Effort Leads Bulldogs to 64-62 Win Over Goldey-Beacom

BOWIE, Md. –The Bowie State women's basketball team (2-2) handled adversity, defeating Goldey-Beacom College (2-3), 64-62 after a big fourth quarter performance inside A.C. Jordan Arena Sunday afternoon.

Bowie State trailed by six points (52-46) at the end of the third quarter but it would be the fourth stanza that the Bulldogs would add a little drama for a thrilling finish.

To begin the fourth period, BSU stole the lead from the Lightning on a 11-2 run, capped off by a jumper from senior Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, MD) with 6:07 left remaining. Hutton's basket led to Bowie State scoring five unanswered points until GBC made a layup to cut the lead 58-56 with 3:31 on the game clock.

The Lightning tied the game at 58-all on two free throws and then regained the lead when Alexis Harrison hit 1-of-2 freebies. On the ensuing possession, sophomore Robyn Howard (Temple Hills, MD) hit a gutsy jumper from the wing to put the Bulldogs ahead with 55 seconds left. Both teams would split a made free throw apiece before Howard came up with a critical steal that led to BSU sinking two free throws as the clock showed 12 seconds remaining.

GBC fired a 3-pointer with four seconds left but Howard came up big again for the Bulldogs when she converted on 1-of-2 free throws that sealed the win for BSU, extending its home win-streak to 19 games.

Redshirt freshman Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) recorded her first double-double of the season, with 17 points and 14 rebounds while junior Drew Calhoun (New Carrollton, MD) also finished with 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the 3-point line. Hutton chipped in 10 points, including a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line to go along with seven rebounds.

Bowie State will look to keep their winning momentum going with a road contest at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Dec. 4. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
