BOWIE, Md.– The Bowie State men's basketball team dropped a 47-39 decision to the visiting Shippensburg Raiders Sunday afternoon inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 28-percent from the field, hampered by a second half that saw BSU convert just 7-of-30 shots from the floor.
Bowie State (1-8) got off to a hot start with a 3-pointer from graduate senior Tyler Jones (Pleasantville, NJ), the Bulldogs owned a lead of 6-2 before Shippensburg tied and then stole the lead on an 8-0 run (10-6) with 11:39 on the game clock. Both teams would exchange baskets over the course of the first half but the Raiders would build its largest lead of the stanza (7) after a 3-pointer from Kiyon Hardy, followed by a tip-in from Rashon Johnson.
The Bulldogs managed to plow away at the deficit, closing within one (21-20) to Shippensburg when sophomore David McCullough (Bowie, MD) hit a 15-footer but the Raiders scored a layup to lead 23-20 over Bowie State at halftime.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 6-0 run, taking its second lead of the game at 26-23 in the first two minutes. The Raiders regained the lead after a tip in from Luke Nedrow that then led to a Shippensburg 8-4 scoring spread (31-30).
A pair of possessions later, a 3-pointer and an old fashion 3-point play from sophomore Ayan Teel (Bowie, MD) provided the Bulldogs with a 35-31 lead but over the next two minutes, the lead changed in favor of the Raiders for the final time as Shippensburg outscored Bowie State, 16-2 run in the last five minutes of play.
Shippensburg (4-3) didn't have a particularly great shooting day either, going 33-percent from the field. The Raiders were 8-of-26 from the field in the second half but was able to collect seven points in second chances and combined for a total of 30 points in the paint. Shippensburg also held a 45-36 advantage on the glass.
Teel led the Bulldogs in scoring with nine points and four rebounds while junior Keith Duffin, Jr. (Fort Meade, MD) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with seven points.
Bowie State will return to action Tuesday, Dec. 14 against Johnson C. Smith to begin conference play. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. from A.C. Jordan Arena.
