Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bulldogs Edge Johnson C. Smith in 49-48 Nail-Biter for CIAA Opener

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State women's basketball team was able to hold on for a 49-48 edge over the visiting Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith, for its first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) win of the 2021-22 season Tuesday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Bulldogs as Bowie State improves to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in CIAA action. JCSU dips to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.

The Bulldogs shot 41-percent from the field, including 7-of-14 free throws while the Golden Bulls were 37-percent from the floor, hitting 3-of-8 freebies.

Bowie State controlled the opening quarter, after junior Chyna Butler (Syracuse, NY) scored the game's first points on a layup from a steal collected. Although the first frame featured two ties, the Bulldogs held a 5-2 advantage to close out the quarter with a 12-9 lead heading into the second stanza.

Johnson C. Smith took their first lead of the night with a layup and a jumper in the first two minutes of the second quarter. The Bulldogs regained the lead on a layup from senior Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, MD) but that would be short lived as the Golden Bulls used a 11-3 run to push a lead as large as seven (26-19) with 34 seconds left. BSU closed out the first half with a 3-pointer from freshman Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD) to cut the deficit 26-22 at halftime.

The Golden Bulls began the third quarter with a nine-point lead, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Shaniya Jones but junior Drew Calhoun (New Carrollton, MD) drained a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs that sparked a 13-1 spurt as Bowie State regained the lead with 3:26 left in the quarter. BSU maintained the lead, capped by a last second layup from Harris that gave the Bulldogs a 42-41 advantage at the end of the quarter.

In the final stanza, both teams really battled it out until the final seconds. The lead changed five times until the Golden Bulls got inside for an easy two with 3:12 left. Over the next three minutes, neither teams scored again until Harris connected on two free throws with five seconds left. JCSU had an opportunity to win or force the game into overtime but the Golden Bulls shot an air ball that went out of bounds, sealing the fate for Bowie State's first conference win on the year.

Harris paced the Bulldogs with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting while freshman Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) chipped in 11 points (5-6 FG) and a team-high four rebounds.

Bowie State will return to action Thursday, Dec. 16 against Livingstone with a tip slated for 5:30 p.m. in A.C. Jordan Arena. There will be no fans, spectators or media allowed at the game. Live coverage will be available on Bowie State's athletic website at www.bsubulldogs.com.
