Bulldogs Close Out 82-76 Win Against Lincoln (PA) in Overtime

BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State (4-11, 2-2 CIAA) went 11-of-14 from the free throw line in overtime in an 82-76 win over Lincoln (PA) (11-5, 4-1 CIAA) Saturday afternoon in A.C. Jordan Arena in men's basketball action for their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) division opener.

The win snapped the Lions seven game win-streak, giving LUPA their first conference loss on the year as the Bulldogs claim their third straight victory at home.

Bowie State fought from behind 10 points in the second half on a 13-3 run led by senior Dexter Turner (Washington, D.C.) who scored seven points in that run capped off by a gutsy 3-pointer from junior Quinton Drayton (Bowie, MD) that sent the game in overtime at 69-all. The Bulldogs scored the first four points in overtime and never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the way as LUPA pulled within two on numerous occasions including a 3-pointer from Bakir Cleveland with 1:24 but BSU scored five-straight free throws to go ahead seven in route to winning fashion.

Graduate senior Tyler Jones (Pleasantville, NJ) led the way for BSU with 20 points and four rebounds while senior Justin Route (Washington, D.C.) had a season-high 18 points and seven rebounds, and Drayton finished with 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

Lincoln (PA) jumped out to a 25-15 lead after a pair of free throws from Zahrion Blue the Bulldogs clawed their way back when graduate senior Kobby Ayetey (Accra, Ghana) broke away for a fast break dunk that led to a BSU 14-1 scoring run and a tie at 29-even with 1:19 left in the opening half. The Lions scored four-straight free throws to lead 33-29 at halftime over Bowie State. Route led the way with 12 points for Bowie State through 15 minutes while Blue paced Lincoln (PA) also with 12 at the break in 19 minutes.

BSU shot 43-percent in field goals, 33-percent from the 3-point line and 85-percent from the free throw line. Lincoln (PA) finished the game shooting 41-percent from the field, 25-percent from deep and 88-percent from the stripe.

Bowie State will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 19 when the Bulldogs play host to Virginia Union for a CIAA division contest. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in A.C. Jordan Arena.
