SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. –The debut of the 2022-23 Bowie State women's basketball team (1-0) could not have been more exciting as the Bulldogs downed Kutztown (0-1), 63-60 in overtime during the opening day of the CIAA/PSAC Challenge held at Shippensburg Friday afternoon
Anii Harris led the winning effort with 17 points, six rebounds and a pair of steals while
Jayla Irvin recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Katerra Myers would round out the double figure scoring for Bowie State with 12 points on 6-of-13 shooting and four rebounds.
The Bulldogs shot 32.4-percent from the floor, including 6-of-19 (32-percent) from the 3-point line and 56-percent (9-16) from the charity stripe. BSU's defense forced the Golden Bears to commit 24 turnovers while overpowering Kutztown on the offensive glass 21-11.
Bowie State raced out to a 13-4 lead in the first quarter but the Golden Bears made strides in the second frame, outscoring BSU, 22-18 as the Bulldogs went into the locker room with a 31-26 lead at halftime.
With a 41-all tie in the third quarter and 2:49 on the clock, the Golden Bears would close out the frame on a 4-2 spurt that would provide a 45-43 command over the Bulldogs heading into the fourth. However, just when Bowie State started to pull away from Kutztown with 2:05 remaining, a 3-pointer for KU led to a 5-0 run and a tie at 58-all forcing the game into overtime.
In the extra session Bowie State held 5-2 scoring advantage over Kutztown while limiting the Golden Bears to 1-of-5 shooting to secure the victory.
Bowie State will close out the CIAA/PSAC Challenge Saturday, Nov. 12 against Shippensburg at 6 p.m.
