CALIFORNIA, PA --The Bowie State women's basketball team got a 33-point showing from the bench, but fell 78-62 to the California (PA) Vulcans on the road Friday.
The Bulldogs (2-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Anii Harris, who had 14 points and six rebounds. Khalia Turner added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench and Katerra Myers helped out with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Led by Saniha Jackson's three offensive rebounds, Bowie State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.
The Bowie State defense was a problem in Friday's game, forcing 14 California (PA) turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 10 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jackson led the way individually for the Bulldogs with one steal.
How It Happened
BSU fell behind 28-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bulldogs continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 47-20 halftime deficit.
After intermission, the Bulldogs cut its deficit to 55-29 before going on a 7-0 run to trim its deficit to 55-36 with 2:44 to go in the third. California (PA) countered and stretched its lead to 62-40 heading into the fourth. Bowie State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled eight of the team's 20 third-quarter points.
California (PA) kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 65-42 advantage before Bowie State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Shanysse Alexander's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 65-49 with 6:37 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 78-62.
