WILMINGTON, DE --The Bowie State women's basketball team (3-4) dropped a close contest on the road to Goldey-Beacom (2-4) with a score of 67-62 Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs had two players score in double figures, led by sophomore Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD), who had 22 points, six rebounds and two steals. Junior Jayla Irvin (Alexandria, VA) added 15 points from the bench and graduate senior Jazmyne Scott (Brooklyn, MD) added four points, 15 rebounds and two steals.
Bowie State pulled down 54 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Goldey-Beacom's 37, led by Scott's 15 boards. The Bulldogs also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 27 rebounds into 19 second chance points.
Bowie State forced 22 Goldey-Beacom turnovers while committing 16 themselves in the contest. The Bulldogs turned those takeaways into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Junior Seanice Lyons (Upper Marlboro, MD)Â led the way individually with four steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-7, Bowie State went on a 7-0 run with 3:11 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from sophomore Saniha Jackson (Ellicott City, MD), to narrow its deficit to 15-14. The Lightning answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Bulldogs down 18-16 entering the second quarter.
Goldey-Beacom kept increasing its lead, building a 32-22 advantage before Bowie State went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Lyons, to narrow its deficit to 32-30, a score that would hold until halftime.
Bowie State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Bulldogs faced a 49-44 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Bowie State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs took its first lead of the contest on a free throw shot from Harris but over the next five minutes, the lead would change six times. With 48 seconds remaining, BSU trailed GBC by three (62-59) before junior Robyn Howard (Temple Hills, MD) hit 1-of-2 free throws to close the gap to 60-62. Both teams added a pair of free throws over a span of three seconds but the Lightning iced the game with three-straght freebies in the final eight seconds for the win. Bowie State took advantage of eight Goldey-Beacom turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
