ETTRICK, Va. – Redshirt freshman Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) scored the game's final points, including a 3-point play the old fashion way with 22 seconds left, as the Bowie State women's basketball team pulled out a thrilling 65-64 double overtime win over the Trojans of Virginia State Wednesday night at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
In a tightly contested Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division regular season contest, Bowie State and Virginia State really battled it out through all four quarters including the double sessions. The Bulldogs led 18-14 after the first quarter and momentum carried into the second frame as BSU lead by many as 10 points when freshman Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD) scored on a layup. Bowie State held a 32-24 lead at halftime.
To start the second half, the Bulldogs raised a 7-6 scoring spread in the first five minutes to lead by nine on a 3-pointer from senior Drew Calhoun (New Carrollton, MD) but the Trojans would close out the quarter with an 18-11 run including a layup from Shayla Sweeney that cut the Bulldogs lead to one (43-42) heading into the fourth stanza.
Bowie State had built a lead of seven points at least three times before VSU scored seven unanswered points of their own to send the game into overtime at 55-even.
During the first overtime session, both teams scored five points apiece as Calhoun was able to hit 1-of-2 free throws with 20 seconds left to send the game into double OT.
With 3:16 left in the second overtime, the Bulldogs trailed by four points before sophomore Robyn Howard (Temple Hills, MD) knocked down a pair of free throws to close the gap to two at the 2:21 mark. Both teams traded possessions over the next minute until Myers got an offensive board from a missed 3-pointer that led to an And-1 and an opportunity at the free throw line with 22 seconds left. Myers free throw would stamp the win for Bowie State – marking a regular season sweep over the Trojans.
Harris led the way for Bowie State with 16 points, six rebounds and three rebounds off the bench while senior Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, MD) added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. The win improved the Bulldogs to 12-10 overall and 10-5 in the CIAA while Virginia State dips to 11-15 overall and 5-10 in the league.
Bowie State will close out the regular season and remain on the road Saturday, Feb. 19 when the Bulldogs travel to Elizabeth City State. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
