Bulldogs Offense Falters in CIAA Tournament Loss to Virginia State

BALTIMORE, Md. –  The No. 3 seeded Bowie State women's basketball team couldn't find their offensive groove Thursday afternoon as the Bulldogs fell 50-33 to the No. 11 seeded Virginia State Trojans in the 2022 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's and Women's Tournament Quarterfinals at Royal Farms Arena.

Both teams had a hard time finding the groove offensively, but it appeared that the Trojans found just enough to get the win. After a low scoring first quarter in favor of VSU (9-5), the Bulldogs took their only lead of the game after back-to-back 3-pointers from sophomore Robyn Howard (Temple Hills, MD) but a jumper from VSU's Kaaliya Williams padded a 12-2 run in the last 5:29 of the second quarter to take a 21-13 lead over Bowie State at halftime.

To start the second half, the Bulldogs cut the deficit to single digits (8) when senior Drew Calhoun (New Carrollton, MD) hit her second 3-pointer of the day at the 3:03 mark but VSU closed the third quarter on a 7-2 run and a 35-23 deficit for Bowie State.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs offensive woes continued, accounting for 11.8-percent shooting from the floor and 1-of-6 at the free throw line. VSU outscored BSU 15-10 in the fourth as Bowie State couldn't get any closer than 12 points for the remainder of the contest.

The Bulldogs were 9-of-56 in field goals, 6-of-27 behind the three-point arc and 9-of-16 from the free throw line for the game. The Trojans shot 33.3-percent from the floor overall, making 2-of-6 3-pointers and hit 16-of-30 free throws.

Howard led Bowie State in scoring with 10 points while freshman Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) collected eight rebounds. The Bulldogs conclude the 2021-22 season 13-11 overall.
