RALEIGH, NC -- Sophomore Saniha Jackson put the Bowie State women's basketball team ahead for good with 36 seconds to go the extra period to give the Bulldogs a 64-60 win over the Shaw Lady Bears (11-10,4-5 CIAA, 2-2 North) on the road Wednesday night inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (10-8, 6-3 CIAA, 3-1 North) had three players score in double figures, led by junior Jayla Irvin, who had 17 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Anii Harris tacked on 16 points and two steals and junior Seanice Lyons helped out with 12 points and six rebounds.
Led by graduate senior Jazmyne Scott's five offensive rebounds, BSU did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 23 boards that resulted in 16 second chance points.
The Bulldogs' defense was effective at forcing 23 Shaw turnovers while committing 16. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jackson led the way individually for the Bulldogs with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 12-4, Bowie State went on a 7-0 run with 4:49 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from redshirt sophomore Katerra Myers, to narrow its deficit to 12-11. Shaw answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Bulldogs down 18-11 entering the second quarter.
Bowie State kept the Lady Bears from increasing their lead before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Irvin, to narrow its deficit to 24-22, a score that would hold until halftime.
Shaw would increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-31 advantage before Bowie State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Irvin, to trim its deficit to 42-37 with 26 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. The Bulldogs bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled six of the team's 15 third-quarter points.
Shaw kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 53-47 advantage before BSU went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Irvin's three, to seize a 54-53 lead with 53 seconds to go in the fourth. The Bears then fought back to even things up at 54-54 and send the game to overtime. Bowie State took advantage of two SU turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
Shaw then snagged a 60-59 advantage with 36 seconds left in the first overtime before the Bulldogs responded by going on a 5-0 run to seize a 64-60 lead with four seconds to go in the period, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
