BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State women's basketball team (8-7, 4-2 CIAA) went into the half over Fayetteville State 25-22, but could not hang on in the second half, falling 53-47 to the Lady Broncos (9-5, 5-1 CIAA) at home Monday in its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division finale.
Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) led the Bulldogswith seven points and seven rebounds. Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD) tacked on 11 points and Jazmyne Scott (Brooklyn, MD) chipped in eight points off the bench.
Led by Jayla Irvin's (Alexandria, VA) two offensive rebounds, Bowie State collected 11 offensive rebounds that resulted in two second chance points.
Bowie State forced 20 Fayetteville State turnovers while committing 18 themselves. The Bulldogs turned those takeaways into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Scott's one steal led the way for BSU.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run with 8:45 left in the first quarter to take an 8-2 lead. BSU then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 11-8 advantage. Bowie State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 11 points.
The Lady Broncos rallied to take a 22-18 lead before Bowie State went on a 7-0 run starting at the 2:05 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Scott, to take a 25-22 lead, a score that would hold until halftime.
BSU then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed FSU 39-36 entering the fourth. Bowie State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 11 total points but the Bulldogs would not pull any closer in the fourth.
